I used to say that “When to learn” doesn’t matter in Sashiko as I receive concerns about “Bad Habit”. I never rush people to take my Class, and I still believe that the timing of learning “the technique” is pretty flexible. Everyone already has some “habit” and they somewhat need adjustment of their muscle memory.

However, I may need to change this saying for the “mindset” perspective. Unfortunately, Sashiko introduced in English is very misleading (not only simplified), and therefore the technique they develop can go in the opposite direction. I receive many questions, and I see the change in questions about how “mislead information” affects their Sashiko from a “technique” perspective.

ここ最近、めちゃくちゃ運針の動画が増えたなぁと思っています。私が2016年に初めて動画を作った際にはゼロだったのを鑑みると感慨深いものがあります。今では「中指＆皿付き指ぬき」での動画が大半を占めているのではと思うほどに。一昔前までは和裁の運針で刺し子をされたり、指ぬきを使わないという人も多かったので、拡散力というか…ある意味怖いです。

動画が沢山作られるようになり、結果として「運針を教えて欲しい」と私の所に来て下さる方は減少しました。「真似して良いよー」と動画を作っているので、覚悟はしていたことなのですが、同時に「真似をしても独学として」当たり前のように他の人に伝えているのを見ると、なんだかなぁと思うのです。職人気質で育ったこともあり、他人に教えるってそんなに気楽なことじゃないのにねと思うのです。

ここ数年の「中指＆皿付き指ぬき」の運針動画の源流は、私の動画だと思っています。これほどまで増えると言い過ぎではないような気がするのです。もちろん、私が全ての「中指＆皿付き指ぬき」の源流だとは思っていませんが、智慧と物語を置き去りにするような「チュートリアル」だけの世界になってほしくないと心から願っています。だからこそ余計に、2016年以前から刺し子の運針をされていた方は、お話を伺わせて下さい。どこかで線引きをしておかないと、なんとか知恵と物語の部分を丁寧に残しておかないと、何もかもがごっちゃになった世界線では残せるものも残せないなと。

ありふれる運針動画を全て見ているわけではありませんが、目に入ったものだけでも、「多分本質と向き合ってるわけじゃないな」という寂しさを感じてしまうものが多々あります。真似だけでは到達できない所があって、でも私が見ている刺し子は「その到達が難しい所」へ一緒に行くことであって…。運針会への宣伝と思われてしまうかもしれませんが、「できること」は単なる一歩でしかないのです。できるようになった後にどこを目指すか…がとても大切なんだろうと思っています。ま、覚悟は決まってるので大丈夫です。
