A completion of Stitching for now, which means a beginning of its new life as “Upcycled Denim”. I consider stitching (and for that matter Sashiko) as a way of adding story. The fabric patched is vintage fabric, so it can get damaged relatively fast. I would need to add another fabric – next time, possibly the fabric with already Sashiko stitched. By repeating it, by keeping adding the story, this Denim will be, One Day, “Boro”. Sashiko and Boro. Each word carries many stories from many ordinary Japanese people – so it is my best intention to respect the past & future to keep adding the stories.
☆
This is Levis 502, so for men, which I used to fit somehow. Well. Being a stay-at-home father generously adds a nice blanket around my belly… so I asked my spouse to wear it. The fabric used to be “hibernating” as a piece of torn fabric. Now, it is under the bright sunlight as a part of something recognizable. This is what my mother, Keiko, always talks about – and another reason I keep sharing stories. One day, I need to bring her out to the stage to share “her” Stories.
☆
It doesn’t matter what we call this for now – Sashiko, Boro, Art, Inspired, Influenced… but it does matter to acknowledge the people behind the words. The level of acknowledgement will determine the future. Please be a part of this mindful & conscious practice – not just for “whatever we find fun & beautiful”. I will see if I want to keep adding patches while not considering what I do as Sashiko – if I continue, I may restart a Commission Work for this. It is So Good to see them (fabrics) moving in the Sun.

Day.1 of Denim for dear friend. ☆ 4 days to accomplish as much Sashiko as possible with some Boro-ish mending. This is a denim jeans for my friends who will have the Live-Concert tour in Japan, starting next weekend. Yes, next weekend. Lol. ☆ About 8 hours, I completed the…

(Before & After)

2019年6月26日

(Before & After) This is how much I (Atsushi) changed over 9 years or so. There are reasons we are on the surface of Internet sharing the Sashiko we practice just recently: Before 2014, we tried to protect Sashiko by “hiding the secrets” from the public. I was in charge…

Many words change their meaning while traveling across the language & culture. A Japanese word you know may actually have a different meaning actually in Japan. Unfortunately, “Sashiko” already has its own meaning detached from what Sashiko actually is. This is a sad misleading by those who care profit over…
