Not many Sashiko Artists share this process (including myself) as this isn’t always required, and it is really the last step. It is called “Itokiri (clipping the tails off)”. With proper understanding of Mizutoushi, Unshin, and appropriate choices of supplies & tools, one can make both sides of Sashiko as “finished” side. Some Sashiko teachers say that they need to make knots to complete Sashiko. Well… they just don’t know how to. There is no problem with making knots, but it doesn’t mean that we do not have this wisdom based on decades/centuries of practice.

When we use fabric, Fabric “breath”. It can mean shrinkage, elastic, friction, and wear. As the primary purpose of Sashiko was to use the fabric longer, they wanted to “let” the fabric to breathe, letting them to have some “Asobi/Play”.

The Itokiri process seems quite easy & simple. I thought so, too. However, remembering artisans doing so much Itokiri in my childhood, I feel like they were magicians. It is one last step to make it “Sashiko” as the purposeful piece of Sashiko.

*Itokiri is the major reason I recommend “Grip Scissors/Thread Clippers” in Sashiko. When a few thread clipping is needed, regular scissors are perfectly fine. However, when we need thousands of threads clipped… it makes a significant difference.

ワークショップでの実演以外での、久々の水通しを紹介しました。複数のプロジェクトを同時進行しつつ、なかなか「完成」させない私にとって、水通しはなかなかに珍しいのです。褒められたことじゃないけれど（笑）。水通しが久々ということは、糸切りも久々ということで。しっかりと糸を選び、使い、水通しを経て馴染ませると、丁寧な糸切りをすることで両面綺麗な刺し子が出来上がります。

「糸切りなんて簡単じゃん。わざわざ紹介しなくても…」と思われる人もいるかもしれません。実際私自身、昔は「糸切りなんて」と思っていました。ただ、年齢を重ねて思うのは、糸切りもとてもとても大切で、且つなかなかに難しい作業で、気が緩んだ状態で糸を切ってしまうと、作品そのものを台無しにしてしまうこともあるんだと気がつきました。あとはスピード。自分でやるようになって気がつくのは、幼少期にみた職人さん達の糸切りが手品のようだったなと。

「使う前提」で作られる刺し子は、呼吸ができることが大切になります。僅かではありますが、布と糸がずれる（調整する）遊びがあると長持ちします。どこかを固定してしまうと（玉留め等で）歪みが生まれてしまうこともあります。もちろん玉留めをすることは全く問題ないし、歪みを感じるほど使うこともほぼないのだけれど、こうして「アソビ」を作り出す知恵はやっぱり大したもんだなと思うのです。

糸切りですが、ギリギリで切ってもいいのですが、ほんの少しだけ残すようにしています。これは自分の能力と実用性の拮抗の上の調整です。とはいえ、数目重ねてあるので、少し切りすぎても重ねは残りますし、最悪全て重ねが外れても、また追加で重ねすりゃいいだけなので、失敗なんてものは存在しないんですけれどね。糸切り、奥深いですよ。
