When is Sashiko “Complete”? This is a question I often want to ask when they discuss what Sashiko is. Sashiko “can” be the Art. However, for me, a dialogue of “when” Sashiko obtained the status of “Completion” is more important than Sashiko being defined as “Art”.

For many (Japanese) Sashiko Artisans, completion of stitching is NOT the completion of their Sashiko. The end of stitching even can be defined as the beginning of “Sashiko”. I want it to be used. I want people to touch it. I do not find the Core of Sashiko when it is displayed behind the glass (unless there are conditions for it). There are stories for patterns, how we stitch, and where to stitch. The stories come with reasons & purposes. While ignoring all of it… when I see someone defining Sashiko as what they want to (like Zen or Wabisabi), I feel the discrepancy between what they say & what they do.

「刺し子は芸術だ、アートだ…」となんの疑いもなく、日本語以外の言語で各々の自由さで本質を捻じ曲げている人に問い続けたい質問があります。「その刺し子はいつ完成するのか？」というものです。

刺し子は芸術になりえます。刺し子がアートだという見方も理解できるし、アートとしての刺し子も素敵だなと思います。ただ、その無責任な自由の刺し子の裏には、「刺し子を刺し子として続けてきた」人達の物語が存在します。選択肢だらけの現代で、何をどのように楽しもうが「個人の勝手（自由）」であることは間違いないのですが、同時に過去や原点を蔑ろにするような人間性を当たり前とも思いたくないのです。だから聞いてみたい。その刺し子はいつ完成するのか…と。

刺し子とずーっと過ごしてきた身としては、「刺し子が完成すること」は、一つの「区切り」と同じように捉えます。「刺し子を終えたこと＝完成」という方程式だけで存在するものではありません。もちろん、区切りとしての完成（誰かの手に渡す時）は大切ですが、その先にどのような未来が待っているかで、刺し子の本質的な存在価値が決まってくるんだろうとすら思っています。

使って欲しい。触れて欲しい。もちろん限度はあるけれど、「芸術だから触れないで」というほどに傲慢さを持った刺し子は、なんか違うなぁと思ってしますのです。刺し子の伝統柄、模様刺し、幾何学模様、その配置。全てに意味があります。目的があります。そして使うことを前提とした材料や刺し方があります。ぜーんぶ吹っ飛ばして、刺し子は禅だとかっていう宣伝文句を見ると、馬鹿にされているのかなとすら思ってしまうのですよ。
