I put an important message in the QuiltCon 2024 lecture. Some time ago, I learned that there are resources encouraging you to enjoy Imperfection in Sashiko & Boro. Please don’t follow the saying “Happy Imperfection” in Sashiko. It is perfectly fine to actually embrace the imperfection in the process of enjoying Sashiko, but don’t fool yourself by following someone saying “Happy Imperfection”. Saying [Embrace the Imperfection], they imply that there is “perfect” they cannot reach. In Sashiko, there is no such a thing as “Perfect” – as your Sashiko is already somewhat perfect as you are already somewhat “whole” by being yourself. It is great that we try to get better… yet by saying “better“, they imply there is “worse”. Based on what? Accuracy of stitching? Speed? None of them are the core of Sashiko.
☆
Don’t get me wrong. I also enjoy embracing the imperfection in my life, but not the way they describe. Sashiko is NOT a word to embrace someone’s imperfection. It is the opposite. It is a way to accept what you do & who you are. Don’t let others tell you that you aren’t perfect and celebrate something else.
☆
This may sound like a “self-improvement” book that we read in need of help. Well, I have to say this as I see too many people saying “My Sashiko isn’t good” or even “Atsushi’s Sashiko is somewhat intimidating”. They are the result of a misleading introduction of Sashiko in English saying Happy Imperfection. As long as one keeps saying [My Stitches aren’t the right size…] they won’t reach to the core of Sashiko. So, please, please do not follow someone’s superficial understanding of Sashiko, or worse – someone’s marketing which overpaint what Sashiko is.

On the post @upcyclestitches, we have received a heartwarming comment, “Your work belongs in the @metmuseum”. I always appreciate the admiration as much as I do not consider us the “artist” yet (I know I am quite stubborn). We are trying our best to preserve it. The word Sashiko/Boro became…

Thank you for your words- it’s often forgot that it is more important to create something with care and love than to get something without mistakes

Thank you for this very important teaching and wisdom. Wisdom that has been accumulated by hundreds of years and many many generations of masters at this craft. Its ok to make mistakes, but we should aspire to perfection and not accomodate ourselves to a slogan when we can’t achieve it!!

Grazie
