Our Sashiko Story to Your Sashiko Journey

About 9 years ago, after we had lost pretty much everything after an unfortunate long lasting feud, Keiko asked me if she could “sell” some of what she made. Keiko couldn’t stop stitching. She kept dyeing thread & playing with colors. That’s how “Sashi.Co” started in Japan, and then I started a business in the US as “Upcycle Stitches”. The original purpose of the business is to “Circurate” Keiko’s passion. It has been the same since, and “Sustainable Business” is always our priority (and therefore we do not plan to expand our business).
☆
Thanks to support from many people, we successfully sustain the minimum circulation of her passion – Sashiko & Natural Dye. I have once asked if she is willing to “hire” someone to help her Natural Dye Process. She had a questioning face saying “why do I need to skip what I enjoy the most”? Then I remember the story of our “circulation” again. The quality of what we make as the end items is important. Customer Satisfaction is very important. Supporting other (rising) Artisans financially is our hope. However, at the fundamental level, our goal is to keep the Sashiko we practice “Sustainable” – not sell out the business for bigger opportunities.
☆
The photo is from “No Numbered” Sashiko thread from 2023. All of the “One-of-a-kind” Sashiko threads Keiko enjoyed, yet not being able to “number” them as a product. I received quite many inquiries if they are for sale. I am doing my best by waiting on the list… I am not sure if they will be available outside of Japan… yet… Well. I understand that optimizing it would increase production. Simple Demand & Supply Curve. However, we have some reasons for not increasing it, and I really appreciate your understanding of that. Once I get the thread, I will list it on our website!

”弘法は筆を選ばず”. In Japanese, we have a proverb like this “a good workman does not blame his tools”. Well… in Sashiko, supplies & tools matter. You have choices, and using the better tools & supplies will improve the Sashiko stitching both in experience & results. ☆ I always say, “Thread Matters”….
