I sometimes say that Culture is like an averaged “ordinary” of the people who live there. In other words, when the ordinary changes in origin, the culture will change accordingly. Therefore, I say, Culture should change. Tradition should evolve. I do not resist change in Sashiko – I am asking to be mindful in Change. When change happens with respect to the tradition (past) and celebration to the creativity (future), the change itself leads the new culture. When the past is ignored, and the future is commercialized, then the change may destroy the culture itself. To be honest, it isn’t the matter of “Good or Bad” – it is a matter of what we choose. The Sustainability concern we have now is mainly for the “future”. What I speak up here is about the “Sustainability of Upstream” – which is more like appreciation to the past. Again, both are important. I just want us to be mindful of the change itself focusing “What kind of change is done by Whom for What“ – here, “by Whom for What” is the key to avoid being ignorant. If you aren’t sure what is written here, try to think of your Sashiko – by Whom for What. It will explain a lot of things.

やっぱり刺し子は流行りなのでしょうか。面白いなぁ（不思議だなぁ）と思うのは、日本での流行は「ふきん＆色使い」なのに対して、英語圏での流行は「技術＆デザインとしての刺し子」です。「刺し子は技術だ」という表現は好まないので、英語圏での刺し子の流行に多様性を持たせる為のこのアカウントだったりします。技術は絶対的に当たり前に刺し子には大切なんですよ。技術がなきゃ話にならない。でも、技術で完結するほど表面的なものでもないのです。

「刺し子＝ふきん」となることは好みませんが、ふきんも刺し子の大切な重要な一部なので、個人的には「刺し子 x ふきん x 色使い」の流れは他人事のような感じで眺めています。同じ刺し子ですが、何か似て異なるような感覚もあって。「淳、もう少し声を上げなさい」と怒られることもあるのですが、ご自身の刺し子の形を大切にされている人々が存在する日本国内の刺し子は、やっぱり好きなのです。

真似したものを独学と言って付け焼き刃で「私のもの」のように振る舞うのは勿論、嫌です。でも、6年前に「無くなるくらいなら真似されちゃえ」と思って始めた活動でもあるので、覚悟もしてきている話です。そんな私の覚悟に敬意を示してくれる方には精一杯応えたいし、また真似せずにご自身の刺し子を続けていらっしゃる方には敬意と親しみを感じています。中指の運針が主流みたいになってますが、それも最近の話なはずで。とても不思議な話なのですが、素敵だなと思う刺し子をしている方には信念、あるいは学ぼうとする姿勢が存在します。そしてこれは怖い話なのですが、針目はその全てを語ります。針目みれば大体わかる…とは私の普段使いの言葉ではありますが、同時に多くの方に共感頂いている真実だろうとも思うのです。流行は流行としておいて、丁寧でかっこよくて素敵な刺し子を実際にしている方々にスポットライトをもっと当てて欲しいなぁと思うのです。とはいえ、実際に刺し子をしている人は刺し子をする時間が大半です。だから素敵なんだけど。自戒の年も込めて。刺し子を実際にしている人が主役の刺し子であって欲しいです。
