Apparently, there are so many rules in Sashiko. However, interestingly, when one learns the stories behind the words, those “rules” will be just a guidance for us to enjoy more – not something to regulate others. Yes, I do have some rules (wisdom) for my own Sashiko. I teach those rules so that everyone can enjoy the Sashiko we practice. However, the rules aren’t the enforcer in my understanding of Sashiko.
☆
Rules are easy to follow – because it will give them some validation. Rules are convenient – because it will offer the “instant gratification” which the majority of us are looking for now. However, when we talk about “someone’s culture”, we have to be very careful in “teaching” about rules to others. By learning Stories & outcomes of today’s Sashiko artisans, we can find it is nonsense to discuss if the rule is correct or not. By studying the actual Sashiko done in Japan, we will automatically understand the answer to the rules. Do we make knots? Why Do we stitch from the backside? What is the “right” size of Sashiko stitches? Is the corner/intersection supposed to be met in specific ways? We can find these questions on SNS, but they aren’t really relevant. You can do what you would like to do in Sashiko – but please learn as much as you can, especially if you plan to teach. Please don’t be a teacher who “cannot” do it. There is a huge difference between “Cannot (Incapability)” and “Do not (Choice)”.

This is the both side of Furoshiki done by @na.na_45 – when the Japanese “had to” practice Sashiko, they didn’t have enough fabric to cover the “wrong side” – so technically speaking, there is no right or wrong side of this fabric. No right or wrong side of the fabric – so isn’t it strange to have “right or wrong” in its culture?

I see no difference between the right and wrong sides, great job
I may just be a plebeian, but both sides are… the same? Meaning, awesome. Truly magnificent.
Magnificently stitched.
Excellent❤
