On the Internet, we can find many discussions on “What is Sashiko”. Because of the nature of Sashiko, I prefer not to “define” the answer so easily. Instead, I try to share my Sashiko Stories to illustrate the bigger picture of Sashiko. I am invited to the Talk about [Cultural Appreciation & Appropriation] on Saturday Sep.9th (at 8 pm EST). My understanding of this issue is quite shallow… So I will be honest in the talk about what I feel about the issue related to Sashiko. ある会社様から取材を頂く形で、「刺し子とは何か」というお話をする機会を頂きました。刺し子の成り立ち。これまでの変化の推移。刺し子が日常の針仕事だった故に、俯瞰的かつ普遍的な資料に頼ることは難しいので、できるだけ客観的に私の知る範囲で、私の理解であるという前提で、お話をしました。どれだけ回数を重ねても、人様にお話をするということは、自分の中で一度再構築する必要もある訳で、またいい機会になったなと思っています。

一言に「刺し子」と言葉にしても、その枝分かれの先にある針仕事は、それこそ星の数ほどあると思っています。有名になる刺し子もあれば、無名のまま終わる刺し子もある訳で、刺し子と共に人生を歩む一人としては、自分の日々行う刺し子をご紹介しつつも、働かせられるだけの想像力を駆使してお話を続けていけたらと思っています。同時に、今の自分の針仕事そのものを実際にお見せすることも大切な活動だと思っています。刺し子をしながら、刺し子について語る配信を、毎週金曜日の夜9時半ちょっと過ぎから行っています。刺し子への質問でもいいし、逆に「それってどうなの？」というような挑戦的なコメントも嬉しく思ったりします。普段から英語では喧嘩を売られているのですが（笑）日本語で頂く挑戦的な疑問や質問は、きっと嬉しいだろうなと。もちろん、どんなコメントでも嬉しいです。参加頂くことが一番だと思っているので。Youtubeの配信先はプロフィールのリンクより探して頂ければ幸いです。SashikoStoryというチャンネル名です。
