Another Japanese word I want you to know. It is “自己責任(論)” – in English, it will be translated to “Self-Responsibility”, or more like “Individual Accountability”. In rough summary, it means “You are here because of what you have done (or have not done)”. In my youth, I was a big believer of this mindset. I studied & worked hard to be responsible to myself, then I looked down on others who didn’t work hard. When I realized the beauty of “Japanese” after 2011, while I became an immigrant, through a big change of Sashiko by someone foreign, I am NOT following this mindset at all. Why? Isn’t it important to work hard to get what we want? Yes, it is important to work hard to achieve something – but it is also a “privileged choice” to work hard. Some, including myself before, say that Sashiko was stitching in “Poverty”. They say Sashiko was stitching for poor people – it is “Poor” from our values who live today, but more accurately, it was stitching in limited choices – we cannot define them poor, and it is us who have many choices to acknowledge others with limited choices. Therefore, I keep asking to acknowledge the Sashiko not introduced in English well.
☆
I believe we are decent. We do something cruel, disgusting, and sad. Sometimes, some “ignore” the fact to keep their comfort… Yet, I believe we can pass down the Sashiko we practice by simply sharing the stories with “hope” – when there are enough stories, they will listen to us – not the quick & comfortable answers for entertainment.

i appreciate this. i ponder words like “rich” and “poor” and feel they are inaccurately used. creative use of available resources -feels- very rich to me.
sharing misinformation for profit or glory feels poor. 🤷♀️✌🏼
I hope you are saving these posts and accompanying images. They have good potential to be refined into an accessible collection like a website or book.

So, in the US there is also a pervasive, problematic version of “individual accountability,” often named “personal responsibility” and related to the idea of “self determination.” It perverts the celebration of hard work, freedom of choice, and personal growth.
It has long been used to blame people for having been marginalized, mistreated, impoverished, and disadvantaged.
A justification for egregious abuses we’ve inflicted on ourselves / “others”.
