People who shout for freedom (creativity) accuse someone for not following the rules. I do not consider myself an artist. As I have spent so many days with “Sashiko masters”, I would never consider myself as a Sashiko master. So, the story I share is not the answer. My Sashiko is just stitching as my ordinary – like the breakfast you had this morning.
☆
As there are stories, there are “orders”. Here, the order isn’t like a rule to follow.. It is more like an “order” of facts, memories, and people. We may call it “history”, or I call it “Stories”. As Sashiko is a stitchery in the ordinary, how can one determine the rules for everyone else? It is perfectly fine to have a rule for themselves as a part of their ordinary, it should never be summarized as the “all you need to know”. If someone decides what to have for your breakfast, aren’t you going to laugh at it?
☆
I have rules in Sashiko. There is wisdom & knowledge & technique to make it more beautiful, and most importantly “easy” in the long term. However, they aren’t rules. Please be mindful of whom you are learning from. If they are offering “All you need to know” or “One stop for learning everything”, doubt it. Come to Sashiko Live & share your questions there. Then we can “talk”. Live has no modification in Sashiko. You can copy it from there. Enjoy as you wish without worrying about Cultural Appropriation – it is not you who has to worry about Cultural Appropriation – it is someone teaching “it” to the culture to be something different. Sashiko introduced in English isn’t wrong but insufficient – it is missing the most important element in my understanding. My recommendation to start learning Sashiko is the course on Domestika – and then my class to learn Core & Essence of Sashiko – it isn’t difficult at all. It just requires a paradigm shift.

Sashiko on Denim Fabric (distressed-effected to soften the fabric). Good Denim is another important aspect of our Sashiko. 柔らかくするために加工したデニムに刺し子。藍染綿地が基本ですが、デニムと刺し子の相性もなかなkです。 2017-02-09 00:55:01 Source

One of a few Keiko’s art pieces (Tapestry). Keiko worked on this Sashiko Stitching while I (Atsushi) was in a collage far from Japan (MI). Since I wasn’t very strong, tend to get flue or sick easily, whenever Keiko received a message that I was sick, she prayed and stitched….

As you may have learned, a big picture of Sashiko history is already lost. The Sashiko we practice today is more like a “revived version” of Sashiko stitching thanks to my grandparents generation (like around 80 years old now). They are the last generation of Japanese who actually received the…

I have just taken your course, which I throughly enjoyed and which has left me feeling there is so much more to know, do and feel about Sashiko and its practitioners. Thank you for opening the door….
