Occasionally, I come across a discussion on SNS about “Which side do we stitch Sashiko? (Stitching on Back/Wrong side or not)”. As you may know, in most Sashiko projects, we stitch while looking at the backside of the fabric. That’s 99% of my Live Streaming. We look at the front (showing) side mostly for the checking purpose. I found a reply in a discussion in English saying, [The original way of Sashiko is stitching on the front/showing side]. Umm. Although we have to define what “original” is first, in this Q&A, our Sashiko is completely excluded from the “Origin” of Sashiko, regardless of our 100+ years of history & so many Sashiko artisans who stitched on the back side of the fabric.

I can stitch on the front side as well. So, I don’t mind which side they are stitching on. What matters is if they enjoy Sashiko or not. One can stitch from the back or front, whichever they feel enjoyable. When one offers the answer, however, they have to be aware of their responsibility to impact some “change” – this is an example of “Filtering” in Culture I sometimes mention here. There are reasons (stories) for stitching on the back side. We have “technique (wisdom)” developed based on the stories. Without us speaking up in English, the whole story & wisdom will be excluded in “their Original Sashiko” without voices from Japanese. I keep sharing stories to make sure I do not leave any experienced Japanese Sashiko artisans behind.

私が運針をお教えしている刺し子は、原則「裏から」刺し子をします。裏に柄を書いて、裏を見ながら針を動かすのです。これは「両面を綺麗に見せたい」という美意識からきたもので、それもまた技術の一つだと思っています。ただ、「裏から刺し子をしなければ間違いだ」という意味ではありません。一つの刺し子の形としてご紹介して、「どちらからでも刺し子ができる」ようになった上で好きな方を選択したら良いのではないかなと思っています。

上記のように説明しなくて特に問題が発生しないのが日本での「推測文化」です。少なくとも知識がない段階で「表から刺すことが正解だ」と断言する人はなかなかいません（笑）。逆に英語圏のような正誤をはっきりさせたい文化だと、断言することが必要になってきます。そこで文化が一部の声が大きい人によって「塗り替えられてしまう」のです。

刺し子を楽しむことが一番なので、裏からだろうが表からだろうが好きな方から刺し子をしたら良いんじゃないのと心底思っているのですが、「裏から刺し子をするの？」という質問に、「僅かな人は裏から刺し子をするけれど、刺し子の原型は表からの刺し子」という英語圏でのやり取りは、やっぱり無視する訳にはいきません。「刺し子の原型」の定義も必要ですが、私たちの刺し子の原型では、大多数が表から刺し子をする訳で、英語での出版物がないからと言って勝手に少数派にされてしまうのは腹が立ちます。ってか、少数派でも良いんですよ。問題は、「裏から刺し子ができず、また裏から刺し子をする理由すら知らない」のに断言されている場合があることです。こうやって文化は切り取られて行くんでしょうね。だから私は声を大きくする必要があるんだろうなと。
