https://www.keiko.japanesesashiko.com/unshinkaiexhibition

This is an announcement for Keiko & her friends [Sashiko Exhibition] in Tokyo between 4/19 to 4/22 in Tsukishima Old Town. (For the details, please check the website above). This isn’t an exhibition where “Art” shines under the bright LED & behind the crystal clear glass. This is an opportunity to feel & see the Sashiko that we believe that they were a part of the Japanese Ordinary & application to today’s society. Naturally, the visitor can touch the Sashiko pieces. For us, Sashiko isn’t Art to only display – it is fabric & garment – so they become their best shape when they are touched, or even “used” for that matter.
☆
Unfortunately, most of the exhibition contents are in Japanese, but I will take photos while visiting the exhibition as a part of “Sashiko Japan Trip 2023”. We sincerely appreciate those (you) for supporting us to make this happen. Next goal is to make this happen in USA…or anywhere in the world…?

Do you have anything that you have spent time with all of your life? It doesn’t

Do you have anything that you have spent time with all of your life? It doesn’t have to be something you liked, or you were passionate about. It can be something you didn’t actually do, but had to spend time with. It can be anything. It may be “books” if…

The first Sashiko in 6 days…? I cannot express how relaxed I felt while stitchin

The first Sashiko in 6 days…? I cannot express how relaxed I felt while stitching. Although there are no scientific references, I can be certain that Sashiko rhythmical stitching is very good to calm down. An appropriate posture (so no body pain), hand-movement (so no need to focus the stitch…

Sashiko can be lonely work – merely stitching. I used to feel serious loneliness in a family business – I felt as if no one cared about Sashiko (with looking at the steep decline in financial reports). ☆ After losing a lot of things in 2013, I now realize that…

Being a fiber fanatic I love to touch. I encourage others to touch what I’ve made. My philosophy is that I want my art to be every day part of a life. For example I have people say my handwoven towels are too wonderful to use. I didn’t weave them to sit in a cabinet.

I’m too sad. I’m French and I also do sashiko. I was in Tokyo until March 3 on vacation. I would have loved to see that!

Years ago there was a Sashiko installation at one of the textile museums, I believe in Texas, that introduced most of the sewing world in the United States to the art, as it was covered on Georgia Bonesteel’s sewing program on public television which was seen nationwide. Most of the quilters that I know, and embroiderers, know what Sashiko is and what it was used for originally in Japanese culture. I love watching you do it and I’m glad that you are resparking an interest for people who have not been aware of what it is, who don’t know how important it was in daily life; that it was not about perfect stitches, but about a friendly competition of creating beautiful yet purposeful embroidery patterns that were a part of service-oriented working garments. I wish I could be there for the installation in Tokyo ☺️
