The foundation of Sashiko is in “Ordinary”. This “Ordinary” may be different from yours as the Sashiko’s Ordinary is based on Japanese Culture. However, there are many similarities in the “Ordinary” – and one common fact is that our ordinary is a result of accumulation – a consistent effort defines what we have today.

☆

Many find our Sashiko so accurate, even, fast, and inspiring. I appreciate their admiration. I teach “how to” – but I rarely ask students to stitch “evenly” or “fast”. I often ask them to do the opposite. Instead of teaching what to do, I share the “Kata (Form)” – Some say that “practice makes it better” – and yes, it is true. However, the form will change the quality of practice. We do not need a tall Samurai Sword & martial art practice to slice onions for tonight’s dinner. We simply need a good knife & cutting board. Both swords and cooking knives function as “cutting” – yet the forms are different – and that’s pretty much what I teach in my class (that’s the biggest difference compared to other “Sashiko Classes”). Practice is important – but “Practice on/with What” will make a significant difference.

☆

So, please do not learn from someone who says “Whatever you want to do is fine”. The statement itself is true, but there are some certain “forms” to follow as Sashiko is a long-established practice. “Whatever” isn’t a password to be creative – it is often a sign of “not-knowing”. The key to have Sashiko like ours is “rhythm” – and I hope you will enjoy “Free Jazz” after you learn how to play the Standard.

Thank you for reactions to the previous post about “Vintage fabric and the spirit in it (Animism)”. I hope I communicated that it isn’t about the fabric you receive tangibly – it is about our heritage we can appreciate in today’s society. It isn’t our first intention to bring the…

Fabric doesn’t become “Boro” without stitching. We call that Japanese hand-stitching, resulting in Boro, as Sashiko. I am proud of our journey of sharing Sashiko today, which is like creating the future of Boro by enjoying Sashiko. We also keep making Sashiko pieces. Let’s surprise the world together ☆ New…

I’ve got the thimble. I’m gonna start doing it. Can you show some stitching where we can really see how the thimble is working, please. 😍

The stitches you see in the video are those the stitches you make on the back? So they look nice on the front?

You asked which posts we like – I loved this one. I too teach hand stitch of the ordinary repetitive rhythmic kind. I share your frustrations but I am English teaching in England so the entitlement and misunderstanding make it mostly too embedded to challenge.
