I am glad that the reel I shared was somewhat inspiring & helpful. When I pick up my Unshin – Running Stitch – as a short video, many people point out the “Speed” of stitching. When we look at Sashiko as a technique, skill and “Result of Art”, it is very understandable that the speed & accuracy is the first thing we notice. Their reaction is perfectly natural, but that’s only a small part of the Sashiko we practice. I barely focus on the speed of stitching in my ordinary days. It “happens to be” fast – The speed isn’t my priority – and neither stitches accuracy. Then, they (and you) may wonder, “what is the priority in Sashiko?”. Well, this account exists to explain that as the other many “Sashiko introduced in English” do not mention about. The “Main Focus” cannot be, unfortunately, explained in a single sentence due to a big cultural difference. So, reading 1,000+ posts here and watching 100+ videos on Youtube will help you to understand what Sashiko is.

Another extreme analogy. When one wants to run fast, they do not focus on “running fast” itself. They focus on their form, breathing, muscle movement, and “rhythm”of running to be faster (and many more!). Proper learning isn’t really necessary to just run, but if a goal is to run fast, then learning it properly is necessary. As a result of practice under good supervision, they “end up with” running fast. Same as stitching – anyone can do Sashiko stitching itself with no training or guidance. Practice will make their stitching better. However, if the goal is to improve “faster”, then having a teacher is a good idea. Don’t choose the teacher saying “Run Fast”. Choose the teacher telling you “What to do to run fast”. This is an analogy in a very competitive field – Sashiko exists in ordinary days – yet the principle is very similar. By learning the Kata (posture), anyone can stitch like we do – and it won’t take years to make it happen.

‘What I talk about when I talk about running’ 😄
An excellent explanation (and comparison)! I feel this is true for any practise or art . . .
I feel so inspired!
