In order to preserve one specific culture, I focus on “people” rather than a group, an organization, and even a bigger entity. Each Individual mindset is more important than collective decisions made by big organizations. What I try to preserve is quite insignificant to the majority (and yet very significant to me). Therefore, depending on the “movement” can cause a lot of misunderstanding. Therefore, I care for every individual whom I meet, especially those who wish to learn what Sashiko is for us. Culture will not be preserved even if one big majority decides to do so – because the individuals are the one who maintain the culture.
☆
In this case, radical actions are also less preferable. “Winning” in argument makes us feel better, but will not directly result in “preserving” the culture. I sometimes need to take a rough route to share the honest Sashiko Stories, which can be considered as “hostile”. However, it is NOT my intention to make any enemies – I would like to be friends with anyone, including those who are hurting me and destroying the cultural significance of Sashiko (I know it is a super idealism, but again, “winning” in dualism will not take me to the place I want to go).
☆
Some may think it is a form of “Grass-Root Movement”. It is similar, but what I do is not even “Movement”. I am just asking for one thing we should have as a human (which we may have forgotten) – Humanity like Care, Respect, and Acknowledgement for others, especially those who had spent so much time in the “culture”. My words may lead a movement, but what matters is “who we are”, not the movement itself. Sashiko is insignificant for many people, but it is my life. I hope that my wishes for human beings are not so missing the point.

I am glad that my insight about the “Cultural Appropriation in Sashiko” encourage people to enjoy Sashiko more. At the same time, I learn that the topic of Cultural Appropriation is sensitive, and therefore, complex to describe in one paragraph. The topic of C/A seems to reflect the fear we…
