“Cultural Sustainability”. The message is simple: “Please acknowledge the stories & people behind the word”. No need to worry about learning itself – what I ask for is just an acknowledgement unless one is not teaching (teaching comes with responsibility, so one should be expected to have a certain level of commitment). I say “Thread Matters in Sashiko”, and I ask to support our Sashiko supplies, mainly Sashiko Threads. Sometimes, I receive upset comments about how I would encourage people to purchase new threads when they have enough “whatever” threads – accusing me of being anti sustainability. Well. Choosing a good Sashiko Thread “can” be better for the environment in the long-term. In most cases, “a wisdom” is developed after a long time of practicing it. The piece of information & practice will NOT be wisdom if it isn’t sustainable itself. When we learn (or even acknowledge) the wisdom, we do not need to jump at Instant Gratification. Wisdom often offers us “cheaper” and “more sustainable” ways to enjoy the practice.
☆
One example is Hitomezashi. When I work on Hitomezashi smaller than the size of ½ letter sized fabric (or area of fabric), I wouldn’t purchase any extra tools. Not “Pattern Pre-Printed Fabric”, Not “Stencil or Template” to draw the grid. What you need is just a printer, paper, a good ruler, and a good pencil. In the long term, “learning” can save a lot of time and money – there are always reasons why we use specific tools & supply with specific wisdom. What I do is pretty much sharing all of it. I hope those who received the link to “How to draw Grid” (Free for limited time) can now save money & time to purchase the grid-pre-printed fabrics. It is very easy, and extremely useful in many cases. (I decided to share this wisdom in public because I couldn’t stand for someone suffering in such easy things – preparing the grid. I am summarizing some Wisdom into one reasonable course. Wait for an update!).

We believe the fabric talk. Some fabric narrates its stories. I sometimes feel it is nonsense to discuss what is “right” in Sashiko. The stitches show who we are. Therefore, I share the importance of the process in Sashiko. ☆ My stories aren’t much from books although I love books….

The Sashiko in the big trend is greatly “Romanticized”. Instead of introducing what Sashiko can be, some cut and pasted the superficial appearance of Sashiko & romanticized it. Unless a non-Japanese person realizes this trend, the mainstream of Sashiko will always be romanticized. I will keep speaking up – but…

I love using real japanese sashiko threads, I feel more connected, and the way they soften and become part of the fabric is really beautiful.
