I still feel under the weather continuously… Although I do not share a post ever

atsushijp, 2022年11月19日

I still feel under the weather continuously… Although I do not share a post everyday, nothing is different. I share Sashiko Stories for the future. Sometimes, I find a misunderstanding about us that we work for “someone”. It is interesting to know how “the others” view us – we rarely work for someone because of 2 reasons, (1) budget, and more importantly (2) we ask our clients to understand who we are. We cannot work with “anyone” who considers us a sort of “subcontractor” expecting us to fit (remodel) us into their “standard”. That may be another reason I do not have a publication yet. Presenting who we are as we are is important.
☆
(Besides the so-generous & understanding clients,) What we make is for “the future” – not for someone specific today. We don’t know how many “Sashiko Pieces” we can make in our life-time. WeI would like to spend time stitching & making more… and then someone “may” find it as “Art” and purchase it to support the artisans & artists, including us & our friends. So, Sashiko isn’t really a business for us… which explains the analogy of “vehicle” a few posts ago I introduced.
☆
This belief has not changed at all… but I also think we need to think “a departure” for Sashiko. What we make, like our child, shouldn’t be kept in our house all the time. I don’t know the “right” pricing, no budget/time for good marketing, and just the record of our stitches. To start thinking about departure, I am working on an “auction” for what we make. This may sound a bit arrogant, but if the world defines Sashiko as “The Art”, then let’s see how they would react to an opportunity. This is just an idea, and I don’t know how & what to put on the auction. The goal is to ask someone to carry what we make – as their treasure, as something special for them from us.

I often say “Sashiko(Boro) is NOT ___”. For example, I say, Sashiko is NOT a word for (visible) mending (although mending is an important part of Sashiko). When I say “Sashiko is NOT___”, some immediately demand answers and definitions saying, “then what is Sashiko?”. I understand their need in their…

Speaking from the Sashiko stitcher’s point of view, there is no vivid boundary between Sashiko & Boro. They are on the same line of hand-stitching with care. It is not like “Sashiko or Boro”. It is like, “Sashiko and then Boro”. The exhibition of authentic Boro is opening this Friday…

I often say “All Different, All Good” when I teach Sashiko. It is my brief answer to the frequent question – “What is a good size for Sashiko”. All stitches “can be” a good size when a stitcher keeps learning what Sashiko is for us. What I teach is not…

I fear artists always have been and always will be misunderstood and taken advantage of, taken for granted .

Be aware that some people see an auction as an opportunity to try and get something valuable for less than it is truly worth.
