The Full view of “Back side of the Sashiko Denim” I have been working on – the photo I promised at the end of the yesterdays’ Live Streaming. I usually do not “cherish” the result of Sashiko – once it is done, I just “wear” it or “use” it. So, taking a photo like this is one “extra (unnecessary)” step for me – yet it is a very important step to make it as a “Sashiko Story”.

Everytime I put Sashiko items on the wall, I feel astonished by the amount of hand stitching – although I am the one who has stitched them. It is not intimidating for sure, but more like… umm… powerful in that sense. The fact that we stitch this much indicates how much we love Sashiko. The amount of Sashiko stitching doesn’t define the love of Sashiko, but without love of Sashiko, we won’t be able to stitch this much – which lead to the discussion I had on Thursday 11/9 Live Streaming: “What do you like about Sashiko”? Please watch the archive for my response to that question – it may be one mind food for you to think through (You can listen to the live streaming while enjoying Sashiko, right?).

本日の配信も素敵な時間を過ごすことができました。ご参加頂いた皆様、ありがとうございました。配信の終わりでお約束した、今現在進行中の刺し子デニムの後ろ側の全体像です。これだけずっしり刺し子をしたのをみると、改めて刺し子は好きなんだなぁと。好きじゃなきゃできないかなと。

刺し子とか手芸における「4種類の好き」について、今日の配信ではお話をしました。刺し子の針仕事そのものが好きな人。刺し子の作品が好きな人。それに加えて、「刺し子」と名付けることで得られる何か（利益だったり人気だったり）が好きな人。あるいは、「（流行の）刺し子をしている自分」が好きな人。いろんな立ち位置から、様々な刺し子の捉え方があって良いと思うのですが、やっぱり刺し子の作品と、針仕事としての刺し子が好きな人が刺し子を支える人達であって欲しいなと思うのです。針を動かす人がいなくなったら、それはもう文化ではなく歴史になっちゃうのでね。

基本、デニムに手を加える時は、「終わりはない」と思って刺し子をしています。このデニムも次は前面、その次は気になる所、さらにその後はほつれてきた所…とどれだけでも物語と針目を追加できそうです。終わりなき旅なんです、刺し子って。それをカッコいいと思うか、あるいはそれを試練だと思うか。今も昔も、立ち位置によって、見る角度によって真実はガラッと姿を変えますから。
