atsushijp, 2022年11月5日

After all, when it comes to “Preserving the Culture”, what matters are “Responsibility (Readiness to take)” and “Seriousness (level of commitment)”. If one is aware of where they stand, then the level of responsibility & seriousness can be balanced. When this balance is disturbed, then Cultural Sustainability also faces the risk of losing something important. I really appreciate a discussion in Japanese Live Streaming – it cleared my head to offer more clarification here.
☆
(1) If one is aware that they are just “visiting (guest)”, “doing whatever” may/can be okay (of course, following the basic courtesy would be nice). (2) If one is aware of their lackness, and what they want to do is to enjoy/embrace it by learning it, then ”simply enjoying it” is a great condition to culture. I am sharing the Sashiko Story so people can join (1), and hopefully move to (2) – because Sashiko is quite profound. However, this account has another mission, which is to prevent (3), which is – if one considers themselves as a master/knowledgeable enough to teach the culture/practice on behalf – to the general public (not friends or family), then one has to seriously realize their responsibility in what they do.
☆
I want everyone to enjoy Sashiko. Therefore, I share. It is a similar feeling that I want everyone to visit Japan because I like there from many aspects. However, I do not want a non-Japanese (here, the person who doesn’t speak Japanese & not living in Japan, not by ethnicity) to represent “Japan” – as I do not want someone who just googled Sashiko to teach “Sashiko” on our behalf. In other words, anyone can be a Sashiko teacher, but it requires a deep commitment to learn, think and Imagine. When “privileged (group with power)” think light about responsibility & seriousness, then Cultural Sustainability will be violated. This can be a very brief & accurate summary of what I am doing for now. I think the message is very fair – unfortunately, the society is full of unfairness, though.

A group photo with Sashiko artisans in Otsuchi. The bag they hold is made by each artisan. Their works look great, and they improved their Sashiko skills by a lot. I feel happy, and somewhat proud of them. 大槌刺し子の皆さんと。 それぞれ手に持ってらっしゃるのは自分で作られた作品。本当に上達されたなぁと。嬉しい限りです。 2017-10-18 18:30:40 Source

Thursday night, 9 pm EST. For today, within an hour or so, I have a Sashiko Live Streaming where I talk about Sashiko while sharing the “unedited-view” of Sashiko Stitching. It is one of my goals in sharing Sashiko: to create a place where anyone can come & find time…

Occasionally, I come across a discussion on SNS about “Which side do we stitch Sashiko? (Stitching on Back/Wrong side or not)”. As you may know, in most Sashiko projects, we stitch while looking at the backside of the fabric. That’s 99% of my Live Streaming. We look at the front…

I agree that it is important to recognize that Sashiko is not a “style” or a “fashion movement” and should be regarded and respected for its historical record and its use in Japanese culture. Perhaps non-Japanese teachers who are simply teaching the technique and not the cultural complexities of Sashiko should make this clear to their students or use the term “Sashiko-inspired embroidery” to clarify what they are teaching. There is, of course, the risk of turning those away who are truly trying to understand this beautiful form of needlework and want to experience it first-hand, which often leads to further study and a deeper understanding.
