Many people say “misunderstanding” is happening in Sashiko. Yes, because of the biased explanation of Sashiko in English, we find many “misunderstandings about Sashiko”. I want you to think, though, about the difference between (1)-Misunderstandings, (2)-Not-Knowing, and the most problematic one (3) Rejecting it (Intentional Ignorance)for their convenience & comfort. (1) and (2), misunderstanding & Not-knowing aren’t bad at all. You are always welcome here as long as you wish to learn. But (3) isn’t acceptable. I won’t be silent any longer.

In order to learn something different, one has to “try”. Changing the comfortable shape is very difficult, but necessary. Analogy – One person has a Square Box (non-Japanese mindset). They would like to learn (take in) something different (Sashiko) by shaping Octagonal Prism. In order to put it in the box, “powerful side” forces the other to change the form – here cutting the 4 corners of Octagonal P to make a Quadrangular P. These cut off 4 pieces carry many stories – and that will be lost by the force. If they decided not to put it in their box. That’s fine. However, if they really want to put it, then the process of changing the square box to Octagonal Prism is necessary – it isn’t easy. It won’t fit so quickly. But, that is what “learning” is all about. I received nasty comments again, and this is what is happening – they expected Sashiko to be “Square” so they can take in easily – when they realize it isn’t square, they force us to change the form ignoring the stories to use the “surface” & “benefit” of the culture – well, when it happens, I call it Cultural Appropriation – or even worse (I am quite angry about the comment). One enjoying Sashiko with trying to adjust the shape is my joy – the ignorance of their “privilege (that they assume others will change the shape for them)” is the pain.

One of my goals for this year is to make one quilt piece. This is in fact a dream since 2020 when I first participated in QuiltCon. Many quilters came to my workshop to learn & appreciate Sashiko, and I have been trying to learn what “Quilt” is & do…

Do you feel “fear” when I write something about Sashiko (& possibly about Cultural Appropriation)? I am aware that I am privileged in Sashiko – a native Japanese who was born in the Sasiko family with support from artisans with 35+ years of experience. Please understand that my goal is…

I like the way you explain the problem and the solution. I am mainly here because the work is beautiful, and I appreciate it. I don’t know anyone doing Sashiko in my area, but if I ever decide to learn, I will find a teacher like you.

Thank you for sharing. I couldn’t agree more. Respect other culture, and empty our mind before learning. In that way can accept any information needed. I’ve been studying Sashiko since 2016 and until now I’m still still learning. So I know what I,m doing is right or wrong.

It really sucks that you are going through this. I just want to say how much I appreciate you and your willingness to share Sashiko, Japanese culture and what these things mean to you. I’ve always felt your videos and posts are so authentic and that you are so inclusive in your approach. I just wanted to let you know how I feel in the hope it will offset a bit of the nastiness coming your way. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on cultural appropriation.
