I was notified that my article & video about “Zokin” comes to the top when we use Google Search. This is a great achievement & example of sharing stories “before” it happens – something I should have done 20~30 years ago (noted that there was no Internet & I was in a Japanese Elementary School). By reading/watching my story about Zokin, I hope that no one would wipe the dishes with Zokin… we have a word for a cleaning cloth with Sashiko “Fukin” – and one ultimate result of repetition of using Fukin (or any other fabric for that matter) is Zokin. Zokin is designed to clean something dirty – like the floor. Another scary example of using foriegn words without proper understanding.
☆
Sure. Sashiko can be “Art” (although I do not consider Sashiko as Art). I am trying to learn more about Art in general, and I hope one day I can consider Sashiko as Art, and hopefully make our living as artists. However, “Zokin” as a decoration on the wall is… too much. Zokin carries many memories (cleaning) and I believe the last place the Zokin deserves is “retirement as fabric”, not “exhibited for showing as Art”.
☆
You may wonder… What is the difference between Boro and Zokin? It’s a good question. I don’t know if we (as Japanese) can define that thoroughly. But we distinguish them as we never “wear” or “sleep in (snuggle in)” Zokin, and we barely wipe the floor with Boro. Both Zokin & Boro are one result of repetitive stitching & using – but it carries different names… why? It is because of its Stories. Please do not mix them up – and I will not “sell” my Zokin although I would pass it down (price on) to our Boro. Interesting, isn’t it?

*I use Sashiko Thread & Dirty Dish Cloth (after heavy usage in Kitchens) to make Zokin – and good to go while…

Sashiko and Art. Especially since I think in Japanese in my brain, I am still indecisive if Sashiko is the Art. I am still learning, but there is one thing I can share. It is our hope to encourage people throughout our Sashiko regardless Sashiko is the Art or not….

The more I learn the value in Western Culture, the more I realize what I share, Sashiko as the Japanese Ordinary, contains the antithesis to today’s “expectation”. I feel something significant is missing in Sashiko introduced in English because people interpret (translate) Sashiko to fit their expectation, which is strongly…

After this post, I will go back to my regular routine: sharing “Sashiko Story” instead of talking about “Cultural Sustainability” and “Cultural Appropriation”. I receive comments saying: [I am worried if I am “appropriating” the culture] & [What can I do to respect it]. Well, the first step is to…

    30年程前ですが、アメリカにいたとき、雑巾と台布巾と食器を拭く布巾を厳密に区別することを、アメリカ人の知人が、洗えばクリーンになるのだから、区別するのは合理的ではない、違いを説明せよと言われて上手く説明出来ず、でも一緒くたにするのがどうしても受け入れられませんでした。今はどうなんでしょうか?タオルペーパーで全部済ませば問題にならないかもしれませんが。。。

    Very interesting reading.
I do love the patterns of Sashiko and thought it was used only to repair items. So, Zokin and Boro stitching, are giving new identities to cloths used in the cleaning of homes…making them easily identified for the job they are to do… have I got that right? 🙏🏼

Words. Definitions. I am enjoying learning the differences. It’s so hard to explain how immensely satisfying your explanations are!

This sounds like what I like to call the “hierarchy of towels” in my mum’s house. Each towel from new will go on to be: special towel – adult towel – kids towel – dog towel – floor towel – builders rags
