Thank you for feedback to the video about “Cultural Sustainability”. In this short film, Roxana (@outofdboxproductions) put my messages nicely. The link is on Story and from Link on my Profile.
☆
I started using this word “Cultural Sustainability (C/S)” after painful lessons happened in “Cultural Appropriation (C/A)”. I am still learning C/A. I sincerely respect those who speak up about this issue. I also wanted “EVERYONE” to enjoy Sashiko regardless of the difference. C/A is a sensitive issue, and I appreciate many concerns & worries about it. I wanted to lower the bar somehow without being disrespectful to those who suffer in C/A – then start using the word “C/S” instead of “C/A”. I have another video about “C/A in Sashiko” on Youtube. Please take a look at that – you can find me trying to lower the bar for the last few years…
☆
I am here to “include” while some pretend to be inclusive & excluding their inconvenience. Unfortunately, “Sashiko introduced in English” is missing one “delicious” part of Sashiko. Pepperoni Pizza is great, but I also want you to try other toppings like Olives. After trying everything possible (including Pineapple which I am not a big fan…), then I want you to find “your” pizza. Don’t let others define what “your pizza” is.
☆
Although Sashiko is simple, teaching Sashiko as “simple stitching” is quite superficial because there are so many People & Stories behind it. This Jacket is made by 18 Sashiko Artisans’ Stitching. There is always a story (reason) behind it. Please keep learning from someone who knows. I just want to let “us” have rich choices – instead of just believing one topping pizza is the only choice we have. (Sorry for repeating the Pizza Analogy… it happens from time to time).

Boro isn’t the technique.

Boro isn’t the technique. ☆ 2019-11-11 17:09:34 Source

Your short talk was very helpful in understanding the cultural aspects of shasiko practice.. I like the concept of cultural sustainability better than cultural appropriation. It makes a lot of sense. Arigato

That jacket is stunning! In this day and age cultural sustainability I think will be what keeps many practices alive. While we may no longer need to repair clothing over and over it is nice to know we can if we choose to and can do so in a way that understands and honors the past. There may yet come a day when we will have to return to doing things the “old-fashioned” way.
