I am very proud of Keiko’s Natural Dye Sashiko Thread. On top of its beauty, there are many stories about her Natural Dye (as every Natural Dye has their own stories). About 20 years ago, I suggested she should spend more money & time on her Natural Dye. It wasn’t in the company’s budget, but that was one of my first decisions going against the “bigger” decision – and I am happy for what I did. We enjoy our Sashiko on Kofu – Japanese vintage/antique fabrics, and it is very important to have the “Natural Dye”. Would you like to know why?

In Sashiko, “the end of stitching” doesn’t mean the actual end as a fabric. When we finish the project with sewing/tailoring, it is one point of “completion” as the project, and it is another “beginning” of fabric life. Good Kofu, the one we use for our projects, are quite old & good enough quality that went through many years of heavy usage. The color of fabric is also faded more or less. When we think of the “beginning” of the fabric after our “completion”, the Natural Dye Sashiko Thread ages the similar speed in the Kofu – Sashiko completes in usage, not behind the glass showcase, and therefore, Natural Dye can be significant.

We have reasons & stories for what we use. I wouldn’t use Natural Dye for “Zokin” as cleaning cloth because of its purpose. I am sure that your “rituals” and “culture” have many reasons – and when one teaches a “Cultural Practice”, there is no such teaching as “Just Because”. Please learn from someone who can offer you the stories, and then technique with many “why”s.

一度「刺し子から距離を置こう（全く違う道を歩こう）」とした私達を刺し子に引き戻したのは、恵子さんの草木染めでした。正確に書くと、「古布を蘇らせたい恵子さんが色を求めて染め続けた結果、お金が続かなくなって（淳に相談した）」というのが本当の所なのですが、「刺し子を続けたい」という恵子さんの願いが、私を刺し子に予想以上に早く引き戻したのは事実です。数ヶ月くらいだったからな、距離置いたの（笑）。今でも恵子さんは糸を染め続けます。「なぜ草木染めなのか」はこれまでも何度かブログに書いてきていますが、またしっかりとまとめようと思っています。次回の配信のテーマはこれにしようかなと。綺麗ですよー！
