atsushijp, 2022年10月5日

Autumn is always my favorite season: when I used to smoke (in College far away from home), the mixture of purple smoke from cigarettes & fresh cold air in the autumn morning brought me nostalgia. I wish I could enjoy this “not so cold yet fresh enough” autumn a bit longer before it goes to Cold Winter. Well, this morning was a bit too cold to enjoy it.
☆
My daughter underestimated the cold outside. While waiting for a ride, she took my scarf and put it on her. She doesn’t really know (& care) what I do for my life – Sashiko. However, she knows what I value & she sees hand-stitched items in her ordinary days – everyday. She wrapped a Scarf around her neck and posed for me. In my wish, this is how “Sashiko & Boro” are supposed to be – not behind the exhibition glass – in the ordinary.
☆
Many ask me if I teach her Sashiko. No, I don’t. I stitch in front of her all the time, so she knows what I am doing – but until the day I think she is ready, I wouldn’t start teaching her Sashiko. I suffered so much to be in the “force” to face Sashiko in my youth. I took so many detours to be here – I could have (and did) hate Sashiko and took a completely different route. For now, all I do is to share Sashiko Stories so someone here may be able to take over my path when I am gone – and my daughter may learn from you about what I did & tried to do. Sashiko and Boro – please try to learn them from someone who knows what they are talking about – instead of someone who offers the comfortable & convenient “answers” to you by saying this is “how to”. Sashiko and Boro are more than just “How to”.

In Sashiko (and many other hand-crafting), the stitching (work/opus) reflects who the stitcher (maker) is. The pieces are like the mirror of the makers themselves. I sincerely hope our stitching communicates to you about who we are, with sharing the photos & videos. At the same time, I learned that…

“I wish I had a day with no errands to run so that I can just keep enjoying Sashiko stitching.” Yesterday, June 4th was the day for me to try that. 24 hours of stitching – continuously. ☆ It was a crazy experience. I enjoyed the time of stitching. At…
