I decided to accept a very long interview. This opportunity will help me to “summarize” who we are & what we do – which I prefer to share many stories rather than Summarizing into one… but, I understand the importance of making it “easier”.

The questions for interviews make me think about how the world looks at us, and how “we” view ourselves. A question, “What is the passion for you to choose Sashiko as a profession?” striked me pretty hard (interesting). Yes, it is my choice to share the Sashiko we practice today – but the choice is made on so many “fate” that I couldn’t choose. I am NOT passionate to share what we do as my choice of crafting or hoppy – I am just protecting “it” with my life, because “it” defines my life. Anyone would be passionate for survival when their life is at risk… either it is irrational and unfair like someone threatening me with a knife. It isn’t our nature to just give up. We fight to survive.

This “it” can be Sashiko, but for me, a more clear image is the hands on the image – my mothers’ hand & many Sashiko Artisans’ hand in my memories. I do not want to disgrace their commitment & practice (ordinary). I know we are standing on the “weak” side in this capitalistic society, but it doesn’t define our dignity. The Japanese originally stitched Sashiko for survival in “given” condition. Our Artisans stitched Sashiko for their pride & life. All I do is to “protect” their ordinary – which I respect sincerely & accept as my fate to pass it down.

3年以上。刺し子でご縁を頂いた方と毎月2回、刺し子をしながらお話しする機会を設けています。時には少人数で静かに。時には大人数でわいわいと。昨日もその一日だったのですが、途中で「淳は、本当恵子さんのこと好きだよねー」と突っ込まれて（笑）否定などできるわけなく、極論、私が刺し子を続けている理由も、こうしてなりふり構わず頑張っている理由も、恵子さんと恵子さんが好きな人等を守りたいから、そして私達をここまで育ててくれた方々へ顔向けできないことはできないから、というものです。

昔から不思議と、恵子さんを母親と思わずにいます。親というよりは、「同志」。一緒に戦う仲間なんです。恵子さんは、その天然さから「みんなの母親」になりがちです。懐かしい話も沢山ありますが、私はそれでいいし、それがいいとすら思っています。刺し子の本質は日常であり祈りです。日常の祈りとは、男性的な「名誉」でもなく「大金」でもありません。では何かというと、家族の幸せを願う女性的な、母親的な「平穏」と「安心」です。だから恵子さんの作品には力があるし、また恵子さんに会う方は何かに惹かれるんでしょうね。本人があまりわかってないところがまた面白いのだけど。良く「似てる」と言われるのですが、まぁこれは私個人ではわかりません（笑）似てないと思うんだけどなぁ…（写真の手は恵子さんです。私の手と見間違えるくらい似てるけど）。
