One of my goals for this year is to make one quilt piece. This is in fact a dream since 2020 when I first participated in QuiltCon. Many quilters came to my workshop to learn & appreciate Sashiko, and I have been trying to learn what “Quilt” is & do it myself a bit.
☆
The biggest difference between “Quilting” and “Sashiko” is the concept of “Precision” and “Control”. I wanted to follow the beauty of quilting precision, and I made samples – then my friend (Quilt Teacher) told me it wasn’t like “Atsushi’s”. Umm. (I sincerely appreciate this advise from this friend.)
☆
Ever since, I have been wondering what I can offer – and decided to focus on 2 things – “Appreciation to As is” and “Layering”. I have been stitching a lot lately, and am still wondering what I am doing. Well, I purchased the batting, so let’s see if I can put through the needle on so many layers of fabric, and call it “Quilt” respectfully. This looks like “Boro” – but it isn’t really Boro (yet) for me. It is just one outcome of repetitive Sashiko Stitching – and Boro isn’t a word for a style or a technique.

Although painstaking handquilting is an endless rewarding job!!!
I find it very challenging to use unshin through the 3 layers of a quilt. The batting won’t allow many stitches on the needle. I feel my rhythm is disrupted. I remember you being dissatisfied when you were working on something with many layers and the stitches were bigger than on the rest of the piece. I have tried to incorporate the Sashiko you taught me into quilting but I feel it isn’t quite working for me yet. I prefer to stitch the top layer and then join the 3 layers by machine for ease but it doesn’t quite feel right to me yet.
Try cotton flannel for batting and see if you like the results, don’t give up.
Sometimes, I think I want to do a sashiko quilt but I don’t like quilting. I am compromising and will do sashiko pieces and ask a quilting friend to quilt it
The work looks beautiful. Good luck with it.
I tried once battling to test out the feel of doing sashiko quilting, it wasn’t easy.. but I do love the thick handmade quilt 💗
Just keep stitching
It is very beautiful
beautiful 🙌
