Another profound Live Streaming on last Thursday (9/22), I believe. The theme was quite “big” to talk about – “Is Sashiko Art?” and “What is Art anyway”. When we discuss these questions in English, we tend to think about the way we talk – which has the foundation of Western culture. In Live Streaming, I asked to be open-minded, to be okay with not getting answers right away. Thanks to kind participation & understanding for my intention, I could briefly summarize “Is Sashiko Art?” in the 90 minutes stitching & talking.

“Is Sashiko Art” is a good topic to make another video, a shorter version summarizing my points to offer as “my” answer to the world. However, if possible, please try to listen to the whole Live Streaming so that you may have an “Ah-Ha” moment. I don’t teach you answers that you need to follow. What I say isn’t the answer – it is just a series of stories to illustrate what Sashiko can be.

For me, “Art” is somewhat “Sacred”. It is the highest compliment I can give to others. Although I believe Sashiko isn’t Art (still), my mother Keiko is a great artist. Once we “interpret” what is her philosophy behind her work, we can enjoy her work more. I am here to include anyone who is inserted in Sashiko – not to exclude you by some rules or restrictions.

10日前以上に写真を紹介しておいて（9/12の投稿）、今更ながらの話なのですが、「1+1=1」を表現した柄だったんだなと気が付きました。「1+1=2」というよりは、「1+1=1」。ふむ。初見から刺し甲斐がありそうな柄だなと思ってはいたのですが、恵子さんの意図を汲むと案外大変では無さそうです。写真の柄は全白ですが、使う糸の色が醍醐味になりそうな柄だなと思っています。

本日の配信もありがとうございました。「Kombucha」と「刺し子はアートか？」という詰め込みすぎた配信になってしまいましたが、英語で紹介した「刺し子はアートになりうるけれど、アートじゃない刺し子という存在も知ってほしい」という纏めを日本語でも表現できていれば幸いです。

矛盾に聞こえるかもしれませんが、個人的に恵子さんの刺し子はアートだと思っています。今回の柄のように、長い間触れることによって作り手が何をしたかったのか、何を思っていたのかという主張が聞こえるものは、一般的な基準ではアートなんだろうと思います。あるいは、私みたいな左脳に支配されている人間が言語化することで、アートになるのかもしれません。布（作品）が語ることそのものは決してアートと断言することはできないので。考えれば考えるほど面倒になってくる話です。「そんなんどうでも良いじゃん」と思うのと同時に、これをしっかり「日本語で考えて、できれば”説明できる”ようになること」が、文化を考える上で大切なんだろうなと思っています。是非、「刺し子はアートか」への思い、配信で聞いて頂けたら嬉しいです。
