As you know, I do not define “Japanese words” in English easily because a simple definition from one perspective (from Western value system) may leave something important behind. Boro is NOT a word for patchwork in Japan. Unfortunately, the definition of “Boro as Japanese Style Patchwork with recycling fabric” lacks one of the most important elements in Boro (which I explain on Instagram, Youtube & Patreon. Please find them. I won’t repeat it today).
☆
However, of course, I do have my own definition of the words – both “Sashiko” and “Boro”. For me, what defines Boro is the amount of stitching we can see in the Boro. Patchworking is an important process to make a fabric Boro, but enlarging the fabric with connecting fabric scrap itself will not make the work Boro. The amount of stitching, which is for me, the amount of caring will define the Boro greatly. The fabric we layer matters. The thread we use on caring (stitching) matters. Instead of “technique”, the story (intention) is the most important element in making something to be Boro.
☆
Yes, I agree that “Boro” is beautiful. However, the beauty itself isn’t the core story of Boro. Technique is important, but please do not limit the words & stories based on “techniques” like saying, Sashiko Techniques vs Boro techniques – there are no such things. This is an on-going stitching project – and this “may” be Boro in future while keep laying the stitching, keep adding the amount of caring.

「Sashiko’s beauty depends on the beautiful Stitches.」 It is a true statement. However, at the same time, I prefer the stitching within rhythm than “caring too much to be precise and stithching slow” stitching. It is an interesting part of Sashiko. Of course, the best thing is to have the…

Although “Boro – 襤褸” contains negativity in its practice & word, it has very strong & beautiful message to us who live today. [Stitching into the fabric with so many memories so that we can pass it down to our next generation (often to a child)] is something we used…
