Sashiko is NOT the word for “Mending”. Yes, “Mending” is an important part of Sashiko, but the core essence of Sashiko exists opposite of mending. They stitched Sashiko so that they could avoid “mending” as much as they could. While people of today “appreciate” the mending out of many choices, calling it Sashiko, some Japanese of the past had spent so much time in Sashiko to Avoid Mending. Is this really “appreciation”?

Please do not get me wrong. “Mending” is a beautiful culture & concept. I myself enjoy mending daily. However, using a catchy word from foreign culture without proper understanding can overpaint the essence there. Therefore, this account exists to share Stories so that we can truly “appreciate” Sashiko & mending. Unfortunately, there are people who intentionally “modify” the culture of Sasashiko to sell their product, to get more attention to their classes. Only thing I can do is keep sharing my stories, and asking you to share our Stories.

When you know the stories behind, you won’t call “sanding the denim & patching” as Sashiko. You won’t say “You can do whatever in Sashiko because it is Art”. I am here to share. I am asking you to be mindful of what you are choosing for our future.

破れたり穴が空いた布の補修は、刺し子の大切な一部ではありますが、「刺し子＝補修」という英語圏での今の刺し子の理解は頭痛の種です。「破れた服の補修→新しい服を買わない→SDGs→スローファッション→刺し子だ！」となり、SashikoがMendingを表す単語になりつつあるのですが、実際のところはどうなんだと疑問に思って欲しくて英語で沢山の文章を書いています。

刺し子は本来、「布の補修は恥ずかしい。でも新しい布は買えない。だから刺し子をする」という、限られた選択肢の中からの針仕事でした。選択肢だらけの現代に生きる私等は、当時の思いを実感することは難しいですが、想像することは可能です。残念ながら、今の（英語圏での）刺し子の流行には、その想像力が欠けています。もっというと、「想像力を働かせないように」意図して動いている人がいるのも事実です。

上記の「生活の中の針仕事」という刺し子の本質を少しでも理解しようとすると、布に意図的にダメージを与えて、布を当てて補修をすることを襤褸と呼んだり、はたまた「刺し子はアートだから何してもOK」という表現には簡単には辿り着きません。真剣に考え学んだ末の結論がそこであれば問題はありませんが、私はこれまでそこまで刺し子に真剣に向き合っている英語圏の刺し子の先生には会ったことがありません。要は目立てばいい。要は売れればいい。海の向こうの文化がどうなろうと、今の自分達さえ満たされれば良い – 沢山選択肢はあるのにも関わらず – です。

「楽しければなんでもいいさ」という言葉は真実です。でも、その真実を守り抜いてきた人等がいます。「楽しい」と「楽をする」は違います。楽しくなった刺し子が、今後も楽しいままでいて欲しいのです。
