「仏作って魂入れず」- this is a Japanese proverb to describe the condition of something very important missing at the process of finishing. The word itself means: An action to forget to put the spirit in the Buddha Statue at the final process. This is a proverb to teach us to NOT skip the most important part of/in the final process – here, “Spirit”.

Do you realize that the Japanese naturally believe(d) the existence of “Spirit”? This proverb will not be created if they do not believe in the Spirit – they are saying no matter how good (or bad) the result is, it is almost meaningless if we forgot the spirit. Sashiko exists in the same culture – where the people naturally believed in the spirit – and the power of spirits.

Is there such a thing as Right or Wrong in “Spirit”? No, I don’t think so. It is similar to defining which person is Right or Wrong. We as human society have been spending so much time & effort to get out from putting a value in things (or even people) based on “value by someone with power”. Some say, “Sashiko is beautiful Art, so we can do whatever” in Sashiko. The statement itself is true, but it is missing the most important part of Sashiko as a culture. While talking to many Sashiko practitioners in the last few weeks in “gathering”, I am confident in what I am saying. Please spread the words. I keep sharing to protect something very important for us, and most likely for you.

「仏作って魂入れず」とは、物事をほとんど仕上げながら、肝心な最後の仕上げが抜け落ちていることを喩えた言葉なのですが、面白いのは「魂が入らなければ仏像としての役割が果たせないではないか」という、魂の存在が前提にあることです。日本に存在する様々な風習、習慣、慣例、儀式をみても、あるいはもっと日常的な言葉をみても、魂の存在を（信じる信じないかは別として）当たり前のように受け入れていると思うのです。

とても不思議な話なのですが、僕は基本的に日本人の方がした刺し子は「好き」です。その好きの中で好みは勿論別れるのですが、でも原則的に好きで、少なくとも嫌悪感は抱きません。私は好き嫌いが激しいので、自分でもとても不思議なのですが、この「魂の存在を当たり前にすること」を先週1週間、刺し子をしながら話す機会が続き、ふと気がついたのです。「気持ちを込めて作ってね」という言葉は、完全には英訳にできません。「気持ち」を魂や念と捉える日本人と、気持ち＝Feeling＝感情と訳されてしまう非日本語圏では、どうしても違いが出てくるのです。

残念ながら、英語圏での刺し子には「正解」が存在するようです。魂には正解も間違いもないように、刺し子には正解も間違いも存在しません（地域毎の決まり事等は存在します）。全ての刺し子ーつまりは思いを込めて行う針仕事ーは正解であり、それに二元論で線引きすることすら間違っていると思うのです。これは自戒の文章でもあります。仏作って魂入れずとならないように。恵子さんの作品を実際にご覧下さった方が「柔らかい」とか「暖かい」と表現下さる理由にも、同様の物語が存在するんだろうと思います。作る作品そのものが、恵子さんの、そして恵子さんの願う魂なんだろうと思うのです。
