I say there are no rules in Sashiko. More accurately, my message is “There is no such a thing as Right and Wrong in Sashiko”. However, it doesn’t mean “whatever is fine”. In a dualistic mind, I see Sashiko in 2 tendencies of “Must Follow the Rule” or “Do whatever”. I explain the risk of “Whatever”. Today, I would like to raise a question as to why “the rule” exists (in general – no rules in Sashiko).

I think the biggest rule we follow is “Law”. I would like you to think about why we have Law in our society. It is easy to imagine that society will not function without the Law. “We need to have it” doesn’t really explain “why”. A process of thinking about the true nature of Law may illustrate the Law.

For me, the Law exists as an outcome of our “hope (to be better)”. When I focus on the function of Law, I tend to think that the Law exists to punish someone who does not obey. Yes, it is one role the Law plays. However, I believe (and hope) that we follow the Law to pray for the better days. The similar goes to Rules. In Sashiko especially, the rules do NOT exist to exclude others. Rules exist to illustrate how deep & diversified the culture & practice can be. Each rule carries their ordinary, and more importantly, their hope & praying. When we define one rule as “wrong”, then we may be labeling someone’s hope as wrong. I don’t want that to happen, and therefore I keep sharing as many Sashiko Stories as possible.
