Photoshooting while re-arranging our items from the lovely Sashiko workshop in PA. This Jacket gets many compliments for its beauty. We appreciate that. On top of the beauty, this Jacket has an important message (story) as well. Some say that Sashiko requires “a knot”. It is fine to use knots, but we rarely use the knots so that we can use “both sides” of fabric as finished sides. The intention is NOT to deceive someone – it is to distinguish “showing side” and “hiding side” and then minimize the difference – why do we do that? That’s where the story kicks in.
☆
The Jacket is made from one layer of fabric with Sashiko Stitching. Both Left & Right front of this Jacket is actually “the showing side”, and the center of the back (bone) area is the “hiding side”, yet doesn’t it look like one sheet of fabric with a continuous pattern? This is what the “artisan with Sashiko Knowledge” can do. This is the craftsmanship I would like to protect & preserve. Please help us out to do so by sharing the Sashiko from ignorance & indifference.

It was interesting to read many comments on the previous post (1/23) about “Is Sashiko really Little Stabs?”. The replies from Japanese were “Oh, I didn’t know how Sashiko is translated like that” and “I think Sashiko is the word for “a person”. Interesting, but my worries reside here. ☆…

I had another great Live Streaming on Youtube (I call it “Sashiko Talk”). Big thanks to @scsarchet for being my conversation partner to enrich our learning. The more we talk, the more “difference” we realize. When we communicate at the Superficial level to “spend time” together, the profound understanding of…

What I was wondering about having two showing sides on this jacket is what you do with the loose end of the thread where you start and finish and with the ‘loops’ where you change direction? I have not been lucky yet to see a piece like this, by Sashiko artisans, in real life and I have not yet seen everything you shared. Maybe you already shared about this? On this picture it looks absolutely beautiful, no loose ends showing as far as I can see. How do you achieve that? I absolutely admire this craftmanship 😍
