Toward the end of 2020, in the difficulty of not being able to “foresee” the future, I started making “Sashiko Mask”. You may remember the discussion here how “effective” the fabric mask is even though I kept saying the mask isn’t really for the prevention purpose: more like “decorative” and “(Let’s) go though the difficulty with what we can”. As Sashiko masks got popular, I received quite a number of requests to make. Since it is all hand-stitched & I needed to make my ends meet somehow in that difficulty, I prepared the DIY Kit to make a Sashiko mask instead. In the town where I live, the majority of people do not wear masks any longer. It has changed. It is an adjustment. I even feel nostalgic when I see Sashiko Masks in my drawer: well, thanks to many people’s support & help, we are still here sharing our Sashiko.
☆
One day in 2021, the mask I used was selected as part of an exhibition in ROM (Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto) @romtoronto. It has been a great honor to provide not only the mask itself but also some videos & voice. I sincerely appreciate ROM for acknowledging us, and introducing the Sashiko we practice. I just learned that the exhibition is closing on Sep.5th. If you are nearby & interested, please make a visit to ROM. (I believe I have a video about this exhibition on Youtube).

I sincerely appreciate the comments in the 2 previous posts (besides those from who didn’t read what I wrote). I am nowhere to criticize anyone in racism. “All ◯◯ is racist” doesn’t sit with me well (yet). However, I acknowledged it. I won’t jump into defensive mode even when someone…

In my childhood, I always wanted to be someone else. I didn’t want to be just a (boring) stitcher. I wanted to be someone important to help this world. Well, after all, I am a Sashiko artisan today. I stitch the Sashiko I thought was boring. My mother Keiko has…

Follow-up Post about “Hand-Made” on 3/30. ☆ I didn’t mean to say that all of the housemaker (mostly parents, I guess) should prepare the handmade meal, otherwise love doesn’t exist there. I didn’t say that. As I received in the comment from @tuism (thank you), in this busy life to…

I still wear masks in medical settings. I think I’ll still be wearing masks in busy, crowded settings, such as trains, for example. The sashiko mask is lovely BTW. I made my own masks and I still wear them. I think they’ll be useful as the cold and flu season starts too
