Culture changes. Well, I believe Culture has to be fluid and constantly changing to be the “Culture”. For that, I admire the change in Culture unlike some think I am resisting the change. I am just shouting out for the importance of “acknowledgement” in the change while some casually destroy (not change) the culture based on their convenience with ignorance & indifference.

Some may call this Sashiko piece as “Traditional” and “Old-Fashioned”. Yes, it is different from the “Sashiko” we can find today. My goal is to protect the Sashiko Artisans who can make these by sharing the stories. Some with care may purchase these, and every penny will go to the support of this type of Sashiko.

I used to be “desperate” because of the difficulty of keeping these Sashiko artisans. They were getting old – now, I learn that I can “teach” the principal and anyone can be the artisans who can make this when they continue. So, my goal has become simple: To keep sharing so that our practice may carry the important element of Sashiko Culture. Sashiko isn’t in the past yet. There are people who are still stitching today, toward their/our future of Sashiko.

突出した能力があるわけでもなく、豊富な資金があるわけでもなく、更に言えば誰か他人様の人生の一部を担う勇気すらない私ですが、「守りたいもの」がしっかりとあります。守ろうとして失敗した過去があり、失ってしまったものやご迷惑をかけてしまったことも片手では数えきれないほどあるのですが、それでも守りたいものは守りたいのです。それが「刺し子ができる人」です。時代の流れの中で刺し子は変化します。私達が変化の船頭だった時期もあるかもしれません。変化そのものは素晴らしいし、何を以て刺し子とするのかも曖昧です。もっと言えば「曖昧なままがいい」のです。

その上で、「伝統的」とか「昔ながらの」と言われる、藍色と白の糸で、伝統柄を組み合わせた刺し子ができる人を守りたいのです。このような大作を作れる人。これだけの刺し子を、ある程度の短期間（数ヶ月内）で形にできる人。

職人と言われる方の高齢化が絶望的な悩みの種だった15年前。守れないんだろうなぁと残念に思っていたところに希望の光を差し込んだのが「運針会」というご縁でした。伝えればできるようになる人はいる。続けて下されば能力はつく。守ろう＆残そうとする仕組みを考えるのではなく、実際に人と向き合うのが道だったのだなと気がついたのが運針会です。運針会でご縁を頂いた＆頂く皆様の見本となる刺し子を一点でも多く残せるように。これからもできることを一つずつ形にしていこうと思います。
