We use various geometric patterns in our Sashiko practice. They aren’t really “Sashiko Patterns”: just Geometric Patterns we often use. When I make a video or a tutorial on how to draw them on the fabric by themselves, I do not feel I am “teaching” Sashiko. It is more like sharing the importance of culture. As many Sashiko artisans say, “preparing the pattern on the fabric” is as important as “stitching beautifully”. In other words, they say, the more beautiful the preparation is, the better the stitching result will be.
☆
We can find many “Sashiko Templates” for sale. There is nothing wrong with using templates… However, if they are going to teach what Sashiko is, I want them to be able to “prepare” for themselves. There is a significant difference between “Can’t” and “Don’t”. Unlike the sketch or drawing, the Geometric Patterns can be explained by Regular Grid or Diagonal Grid. After all, it is the matter of “knowledge” and “practice”. One cons of templates is that they limit the size of pattern & possibility (to adjust): which is against their insist to be “creative” in Sashiko.
☆
As each geometric pattern has a name, they each have stories behind. We have reasons why we often use geometric patterns. Please keep learning as I keep learning (from other Japanese Sashiko artisans) & sharing. Sashiko is more than what is introduced in English today.

Another ”quick” answer for a question (or more like a worry from them). Some advised me saying, “Thank you for sharing your technique and knowledge. However, shouldn’t you protect them as Intellectual Property (IP)?”. Very true. I probably should, but I won’t. Although I haven’t given up the copyright, my…

I have so many stories in this Jacket. Hopes, struggles, challenges, appreciation, and dreams. For me, this is the way to pass down the Sashiko we practice to the next generation. I will explain what the Jacket is about, but for now, sharing the beautiful image of this significant Sashiko…

Thank you for thisclear explanation. It is tempting to use a template. Drawing the pattern on the fabric seems, instead, more genuine

I have always done “running stitch” in my sewing, but never tried Sashiko. Sashiko seems to me like NOT a stitch, trend… etc – Sashiko seems like so much more. I am not Japanese and I don’t understand Sashiko at all, I just admire it. I have Japanese friends who say they don’t understand Sashiko either (but of course they understand more than me!). Maybe it takes a whole life to understand Sashiko, or 100s of years…? But in the “one little stone in the whirlpool” is better than no stone at all. Thank you, Atsushi and your friends, for sharing your Sashiko stories. I hope to take your classes one day.
