We can find many patterns in Sashiko. A Variety of Simple Patterns can be one reason Sashiko became this popular. However, there is no such a thing as “Sashiko Patterns”. We have many Geometric Patterns to use in Sashiko stitching, but they are not the patterns for Sashiko. It is more than that. Geometric Patterns are, of course, not only for Japanese Culture. Your culture has a similar (or even identical) geometric pattern. We can find many stories around the pattern & its origin, and development – and each culture has named the pattern based on their ordinary, or “praying”.
☆
I understand that Geometric patterns are public domain. I will never claim the origin of the Asano-Ha pattern as Japanese – although I use it often for our Sashiko & it has a Japanese name. Since it is a Geometric Pattern, we can use any patterns as we wish. It is wisdom from our & your ancestors.
☆
Anyone can enjoy any pattern. Mixing them, combining them, cut & paste, it is where creativity goes. However, please “learn” first if you are going to use the foreign word for your stitching – here “Sashiko”. Name matters. I don’t want your creativity to hurt someone behind. Including “variation”, the number of patterns can be unlimited. I sincerely hope that they learn Sashiko first (or stop using the word Sashiko) before labeling the ignorance as “creativity”.

“I am confused. Don’t we have to do… in Sashiko?”. I occasionally receive this type of “question” or “criticism”. This is another reason I say that it is “too late” to pass down the Sashiko we (as Japanese) have been practicing. In the modern/west philosophy, we worship authority & rules…

Doing Sashiko all over the jacket is a kind of our speciality… however, we enjoy making a jacket with simple vintage fabric (only when we have really good vintage one.) Umm. I love these, too. 2017-08-30 05:22:24 Source

Tomorrow is Feb.8th in the US (It is Today in Japan). If you follow this account long enough, you may know what Feb.8th is for Stitchers in Japan. Yes, it is a day of “Hari-Kuyou” – a Farewell Ceremony for broken/bent needles. ☆ “Culture” isn’t something extraordinary. It is developed…
