As Sashiko and Boro become more popular, it seems I see “Vintage Sashiko Furoshi

atsushijp, 2022年8月15日

As Sashiko and Boro become more popular, it seems I see “Vintage Sashiko Furoshiki” for sale. These vintage Sashiko Furoshikis look somewhat similar to the photo on today’s post – Sashiko patterns on 4 corners. Furoshiki – often about 105cm (Mihaba) square of good vintage fabric with Sashiko stitching is one of the most popular items in the market.
☆
Some ask me if I can find these Vintage Sashiko Items from Japan. Well, technically speaking, we can, but we don’t usually take these job offers. We are not a traditional “(Art) Dealer”, so we rather make New ones with high quality fabric, which can last for many years, with our hand-stitching Sashiko while using supreme quality thread.
☆
Sashiko isn’t only in the Past. There are still Sashiko artisans who can make this. My mission, or even responsibility, as a Japanese Sashiko Practitioner & Story-Teller is to keep creating “works” for those who still can make Sashiko items. It took a while to restart everything, but we are now working on it – this new Furoshiki (with Indigo Dyed Cotton 100% Fabric & our Sashiko Thread with hand-stitching) is one item I would like to introduce to the world initially.
☆
The true beauty of Sashiko exists in “Using” in our ordinary days. That’s one definition by a Japanese Art Critic for “Folk Art (which Sashiko sometimes becomes part of)”. In addition to appreciating someone’s Furoshiki from the past, I would like to introduce the beauty & fun of adding our own stories on New Sashiko Itesm. As there are reasons for the similar designs (which I will explain at some point), it is designed to be “used” rather than displayed. That’s one illustration of Sashiko not well explained yet.

Great photos from a participant (@from6e) of Atsushi’s Sashiko workshop in NYC. She took the workshop about 2 years ago, and here is the stitch comparison in 2017 and 2019. One of the reasons I hesitate to declare “Sashiko as (Fine) Art” is that “everyone can do Sashiko running stitch.”…

Instagram, Facebook, other SNS. We all try to “shine” on the web and share the “good side” of our lives. “He looks happy” on the post, but we actually don’t know “if he is really happy” in real. I am one of them to show a “good side” of Sashiko….

I share stories about Sashiko. I teach Sashiko. I am proud of what I do, and I sincerely appreciate the support I receive throughout the supply purchase & participation in the workshops/classes. However, sharing & teaching Sashiko (stories) aren’t the origin of our activities (what we do). We used to…
