Another great Sashiko Workshop in @worldshiborinetwork. I appreciate all who joined today to learn the Sashiko we practice. There are a few more seats available on Monday, if you are in the Bay Area. It is my sincere pleasure to experience their “Ah-Ha” moment while learning more about the “Eastern Mindset” in Sashiko.

One thing I am very proud of in teaching Sashiko is that Japanese also come to me to learn Sashiko both in English and in Japanese. Many of them become friends after the workshop, and that explains the Sashiko I teach “means” something to them as well. I say Sachiko’s core is the Japanese ordinary. I used to wonder if the Japanese would need to learn their ordinary from me. However, I realized the Japanese themselves forget their own ordinary. My work is to help them to remember it – for non-Japanese people, it is the introduction for what Sashiko really can be. This fact helps me to assure that what I am sharing is NOT my ego, selfish assertion, or even hallucination. The Sashiko introduced in English is NOT wrong, but insufficient. It is missing something very important.

We all have our “normal” in our daily expectation. Understanding the difference in “expectation” is the key to differentiate Appropriation & Appreciation in Culture. In the workshop, many struggle. Many get shocked. Many get confused, and I can feel all their frustration – because I am teaching them something completely outside of the expectation. However, it is the “learning” I want to share & protect the Sashiko we practice. Sashiko is a form of stitching, but for non-Japanese, it can be “MORE” than stitching.
