I often receive a question asking: [How can I respect your Sashiko Culture]. “Wondering & Thinking” is already respectful, and I feel a lot easier to talk to them in comparison to talking to someone who thinks they know all about Sashiko. At the same time, I have been thinking how “we” can be respectful to other cultures – not only Sashiko, but many other foreign cultures.
☆
One answer is “acknowledgement”. However, it is not strong enough to solve a specific issue in a specific culture. For example, in my understanding, “Acknowledgement” will not solve the general issue of Cultural Appropriation. Then, what can we do? What should we do? Another answer can be “Keep Learning”. You may say I have been saying that while. Yes, but this time, keep learning about “our own culture” to respect other cultures. We all have our own culture – stories that define who we are. Learning it from our own family, friends, and people in the same cultural group may be one way to respect other cultures.
☆
“Learning our own culture” will, at some point, require us to “accept it as is”. It may be something uncomfortable, or something to be proud of. For example, we here on SNS often have some type of power. We may call it “privilege”. Learning our privilege and accepting them can be the first step to respect other cultures. Power & privilege itself aren’t the matter of good or bad. “How to use it” will define the value of it. Instead of denying the privilege, accept it and use it to something we can be proud of. That’s one form of respect.

Some criticize me for playing the victim (crying for attention). Umm. “I don’t know” is my honest reaction. I had always been “privileged” in my life. It is my first time to “speak up” as a minority. I need to learn what is the line between “speaking up” and “playing…

I want everyone to enjoy Sashiko. I really do. Therefore, I share Sashiko Stories that have been filtered out. I want them to know that there are(were) many people behind the word “Sashiko” and “Boro” – which unfortunately got removed out in the big trend by “someone”. ☆ I strongly…
