Although “Boro – 襤褸” contains negativity in its practice & word, it has very strong & beautiful message to us who live today. [Stitching into the fabric with so many memories so that we can pass it down to our next generation (often to a child)] is something we used to do naturally, then we chose not to do because of the wealth we achieved. Although I do not like “Boro” so much, this practice of adding “Stories” is a foundation of my Sashiko. Please be advised, the on-going trend of [Stitching whatever we have as colorful patchwork for the environment] is NOT really what Boro is.
☆
So, some ask me. Why aren’t you happy when a person stitches with their own fabric for passing it down to the next generation? Well, I speak up the “caution” of being acknowledged about what they do – both stitching & naming it. The Name Matters in protecting culture. [It is just a name. We can use it however we want] is a true but sad statement. I want them to know – those who use the word “Boro” without acknowledging the stories behind & those who cherry pick (cut the only good/beautiful part of the word/practice) – that they may be damaging someone’s culture. They may be causing someone’s pain. Their “next” generation will be more alert with these issues. All of the youth I meet in Sashiko are very careful in what they do. I feel as if it is their new standard. Please think about it. What if they find out that the piece of “Boro” was an outcome of Cultural Appropriation? Are they going to be proud of what they had received? That’s the “negative” Stories they are adding on. There is nothing wrong with adding negative stories because the negativity also defines Boro. However… if it is done by ignorance, or worse, if it is done by someone’s marketing, it is really sad. I want our legacy to be mindful & considerable.

I say (& believe) there is no such a thing as “Right” and “Wrong” in Sashiko. It can be interpreted as “No Rules” as well. However, “No Rules” doesn’t mean one can do whatever they want, especially in the case of “telling/teaching” others about the practice. Here, Sashiko technically has…

Such a beautiful piece of fabric. I can see it holds many humble stories – each layer has something to say.
