Mending & Patchworking with fabric scrap is an important part of Sashiko. Howeve

atsushijp, 2022年7月8日

Mending & Patchworking with fabric scrap is an important part of Sashiko. However, stitching “to avoid” mending, and appreciating the fabric before it becomes scrap, are more “Core” elements of Sashiko. Stitching a beautiful design like other embroidery, and framing it for the wall decor is one beautiful way to enjoy Sashiko. However, the Japanese believed, the core “beautiful” of folk art or practice like Sashiko exists in the “Ordinary usage” – here we interpret & understand it using Sashiko stitched items for our days as “cloth” or “bag”.
☆
We can count the number of reasons to change what Sashiko is. However, there are still Japanese who try to follow those “making fabric stronger” & “trying to use them as our daily items”. There aren’t many, but there are. My workshop is a start point of this type of Sashiko – with sharing both technique & mindset. I am visiting NYC for the workshop for the first time after the world changed. To Berkely, CA, for toward the end of this month (around 7/25). It is my sincere pleasure to share the Sashiko we have been practicing.
☆
Join our Thursday Live Session tonight to see Atsushi’s actual stitching as well as listen to random stories with no editing. Sashiko is about stitching – but because it is related to Japanese culture, it is more than stitching for many people who read this in English.

“Accepting” is much more challenging than “Giving up”. However, when you talk about someone’s culture, please try to accept “it” as is instead of interpreting “it” freely. And, please do not “give up”. When one gives up something, they start saying “Whatever”. I say there is no Right and Wrong…

We planned a Japanese style “Lucky Bag”. The Japanese has a interesting culture of this lucky (& mysterious) to get a bag with unknown items inside in the new year. We try to make the “excitement” happen with Sashiko items. ☆ As for this lucky bag, it is only for…
