Our Sashiko Story to Your Sashiko Journey

I appreciate many comments & responses to yesterday’s short video. As you can imagine, as Sashiko is hand-stitching, “Sashiko Denim” cannot be done by a finger snap like magic. We go through hundreds of hours to complete it, and there are the same amount of stories behind the practice. Sashiko is simple & easy, but not shallow. We can make numbers of Sashiko Denim because we enjoy the process & embrace the stories. I speak up that “Sashiko introduced in English is NOT wrong, but Insufficient”. Now, it is my responsibility to fill that “missing” – and I share all of the process between the finger snaps on Live – no edit, no secret, no bluff as a “teacher” or “master”. Find me on Youtube by searching for “Sashiko Story”.

☆

In understanding of Cultural Appropriation, “Who can(should) practice (wear) of cultural matter” becomes a critical discussion. I am still learning it, but my message is from yesterday’s video. “I want everyone to enjoy Sashiko – when the people & stories are acknowledged”. This may not be the standard understanding of C/A, and I am still a newbie in this topic. I respect others with more pain in C/A. However, for me, you are (who are reading this) is the future of Sashiko, regardless if you are Japanese or not.

☆

Does this sound encouraging to you? I am glad. I am here for you who wish to learn what  Sashiko is. However, this can be very uncomfortable to some who have been “filtering” the Sashiko for their profit. Although I speak up about something “difficult” for some, I am not here to make enemies. I am here to ask people to be fair, including those who “appropriate” the culture – to pass down the culture I identify myself with. There is a clear line between “appreciation” & “appropriation” – and it can start with “acknowledgement”.

As much as I need to learn how to turn up the volume of my voice, I do not really think of myself as an “Authority” of Sashiko. I know many people consider me as a “Master”, “Artist”, and “Authority”, the idea of these do not sit naturally with me…

Beautiful. And I appreciate your thoughts about appreciation vs appropriation. As a fan of many aspects of Japanese culture I am always trying to be mindful and respectful.
