“Atsushi,You need to present (research) Sashiko in Academic Field”. Since I started sharing our Sashiko in 2017, I have received so much advice like this. Yes, I would love to. However, unfortunately, I am not ready at this point because, without securing our ordinary, any of my ambitions lose its value. Some may consider it as an excuse not to do it. However, when they understand the “essence of Sashiko”, the point will be clear to them.
☆
It doesn’t mean that no academic research or study is unnecessary. In a big trend of Sashiko & Boro, good research by someone who knows the background is extremely important: someone who knows Japanese culture, Japanese people, and textile (ideally Stitchery), who can write in the academic setting… Well, we are lucky to have the one @yoshiko_wada_ who now is in the Ph.D program.
☆
It is an honor to be part of her “Conversations with Cloth Series”. I will be in charge of their 4th episode, and I will talk about Japanese Sashiko in English now. If you follow this account long enough, you will probably know my message in 2022. This presentation will be a good summary of my message & who we are, the messages I need to speak up about Sashiko through the last few years. Please check @worldshiborinetwork for more information & registration. All we want is the “acknowledgement”, and the “care” after the acknowledgement will protect all of us from the many forms of “appropriation”. I am not here to exclude others: I am here to share so that you can enjoy the Sashiko in a respectful form to many people in Japan.

Sometimes it is better to do, rather than to write about.
