As much as I humbly accept the admiration toward our work as “Art”, we do not consider our pieces as “Art” for several reasons (we are also trying to make it “Art” in our understanding, but I believe the core part of Sashiko isn’t Art).
☆
I often stitch Asano-Ha patterns, especially on Live Streaming. Again, there are many reasons why I stitch Asano-Ha so often. However, it doesn’t mean that I “cannot” stitch other patterns. I just don’t enjoy it much: For me, the essential joy of Sashiko exists in the stitching, not in the outcome. Of course, it is rewarding to see hours of stitching as a beautiful result, but it isn’t the reason I stitch for. I believe some of you here can share the same feeling of “sadness” at the completion of projects for losing the “possible fun tomorrow night”. Yes, Sashiko can be Art. However, please try not to use the concept of “Art” for justifying ignorance. There is a significant difference between “cannot” and “do not”.

A group photo with Sashiko artisans in Otsuchi. The bag they hold is made by each artisan. Their works look great, and they improved their Sashiko skills by a lot. I feel happy, and somewhat proud of them. 2017-10-18 18:30:40 Source

I advocate the importance of “acknowledgement” for the Stories behind the word, Sashiko. I am saying that the Sashiko introduced in English is insufficient (not Wrong, though). However, unlike the other information sources, I do believe that there is no such a thing as “Right and Wrong” in Sashiko. Everyone…

Please do not fear the word of “tradition” or “rule” when you enjoy Sashiko. I would rather you try Sashiko first than thinking about it too much. After all, it is just a form of hand-stitching. However, when you decide to call your work Sashiko after you get comfortable in…

I can definitely relate to the feeling of sadness when a project ends. The joy for me is in the doing, in finding that space where the process is happening.

I believe that making sashiko into Art (with that capital ‘A’) moves it away from its original purpose, to express beauty and enjoy simple craftsmanship while repairing and strengthening fabrics we need to use. Books full of photos of sashiko in galleries can leave normal ordinary people thinking sashiko is too special, too Artistic, for them to try. that saddens me.
