A word isn’t just “sound” or “series of letters”. We have a word (or belief) of “Kotodama”, which can be roughly translated into English as “Spirits in Words”. Kotodama can be translated as “Power of Language (what we say becomes the reality)”, but in Sashiko, I try to explain the actual spirits in words. Therefore, from a cultural perspective, the word matters.
☆
The word “Sashiko” is now something different from what I used to hear. Some may call it “cultural development”. However, I personally think it is a scary change of “a word becoming something else without carrying the stories in its history”. For some, a word is just a word. Using a word seems to be nothing disrespectful or harmful. Therefore, the “trend” can be, at some point, ignorant & indifferent. However, when we consider the word as “a place for spirit of words”, changing the word for marketing (profit, publicity, and self-assertion) looks superficial, and possibly disrespectful.
☆
All I ask is to acknowledge the stories behind it. “Whatever” isn’t the slogan for freedom. It is an excuse to not learn (face to) what it can be. Please be mindful that you won’t be misled by “comfortable & convenient phrases”, and instead please feel the spirits in words.

I occasionally talk about “Cultural Appropriation in Sashiko”. Some people react to just the word “Cultural Appropriation” even without reading/watching my message. I wish they would read/watch what I write/say instead of what you think I am writing/saying before reacting. They get angry saying “Japanese use ○○, and they should…

Regardless of my fear(pain) in Cultural Appropriation in Sashiko, I am happy to see many people get to know what Sashiko is. Although some information may be filtered/twisted, those who respect the origin will eventually reach the stories. After all, what I would like to do is to pass down…
