We live in such a confusing society. One side defines what we do as the Art. Another group says that I am a whinger (as over-reacting & exaggerating). I always say that the principle of Sashiko exists in the Japanese ordinary. So, yes, for Japanese, Sashiko may not be such “fancy” things. It is a mere form of hand-stitching developed in Japan, after all.
☆
However, well therefore, Sashiko has the power to influence this world especially where it is dominated by a powerful language: English. I used to think that I was sharing extremely insignificant things. In fact, it is new & inspiring for those who do not have Japanese culture as the ordinary. That’s how Sashiko can contribute.
☆
I want everyone to enjoy Sashiko. Therefore, I share everything I have without any cost (your support would be appreciated, though). One may encounter a piece of information that Sashiko isn’t so significant. Yes, it is NOT significant for those who do live in/with the Japanese Culture. If not, defining Sashiko as “insignificant” can be a form of Cultural Appropriation (because they don’t know the stories behind it). Even worse, it is extremely disrespectful, insulting, and disgusting to define someone’s culture saying “It is just stitching. Period” without trying to learn the culture, language, and history of the practice. Sashiko is more than what they can read in English (or any other non-Japanese language).

I have been introducing this beautiful Kakishibu Color as “Persimmon Tannin / Kakishibu” Dye. I share stories of what “Kakishibu” is based on my understanding of Kakishibu in Japanese. I have to make a correction with an apology. My description was not wrong – but incomplete. I just learned that…

I don’t have any degree in Art, Sociology, Philosophy, or other related fields to talk about “Culture” of Japanese people. However, one true thing is that I am a Japanese person who had never left Japan until the age of 18. I believe I can share my personal experience &…

Everything one can do can be elevated to an exceptional level. Basket making. Weaving. Cake decorating. How often have people looked at abstract art and said “I could’ve done that.” Well, you didn’t do that and you wouldn’t have done it at that level, either. It’s the same thing with Sashiko and other handcrafted things. There is an elevated level that you can get to via education or apprenticeship. With watching, listening, trying and blundering, and trying over and over. People who don’t respect the works of hand and elevated craft and intentional practice are ignorant. Willfully so, in my opinion.
