Recently, I had several opportunities to deeply consider the topic/issue/idea of Sustainability. It is interesting to see the world finding Sashiko as a “Sustainable” practice, and I believe it is. I am happy about that. At the same time, focusing on materialistic sustainability may unbalance Cultural Sustainability. Does it seem difficult to balance them?
☆
No, it is easy to balance it. In fact, it can be cared for simultaneously. Sustainability is a complex discussion topic. It covers a variety of social concerns and there isn’t the “right answer” for that. However, there is one simple silver bullet to care for it. It is “a bit of time being mindful” when we make a choice. 5 seconds before reacting in making the choice can hugely contribute to many kinds of Sustainability, I believe.
☆
I use plastic to protect thread from possible water damage (I offer no plastic option, too). It is my mindful decision to avoid “waste”. At the same time, from the sale I receive from the caring customer, not only do I pay the supply fee directly to the artisans, I also choose the “Clean Energy” option to shop for electricity. We live in a rich society where we can make millions of choices everyday, and Sashiko is a beautiful culture of “no choices”.
☆
Unfortunately, not many spoke up about the “principal” of Sashiko in English until recently. Now, thanks to SNS & Internet, and my timing (to be old enough to go through the pain), our voices are heard. It is not difficult to maintain the Sustainability. All we need is our “mindful” choice. Sashiko is all about being mindful (There are stories about the Japanese definition for mindful, but that’s another story).

I talk about the importance of the Japanese Language in order to understand what Sashiko fully is. However, it doesn’t mean that every Japanese (anyone with fluent Japanese language skill) is well educated to define what Sashiko is. Some are using the word “Sashiko” to market themselves regardless of their…
