Our Sashiko Story to Your Sashiko Journey

Some of you may have realized it. Yesterday’s post, it is not only toward you but also to myself. The Internet caused the emotional pain I have never felt. However, it also created a place for me to be. No matter how bad I feel, I know you are here to read. I made it here again today, and so will I be here again to write another story. “a Place to be (Ibasho)” is one of the reasons I can continue this painful journey without return (in regular successful measures such as money or title).

☆

Some may wonder, “Isn’t this account related to Sashiko”? Yes, it is. Their wonder explains how much they do not know about Sashiko. I believe the concept of “Ibasho” is more essential than how “beautiful” one can stitch in Sashiko. In Japan, in patriarchy, women served for the family. In such limited (emotional) resources, they probably shared the time in stitching here and there – a place for them to be. They learned Sashiko in a place (either family or community), and therefore, there is no such a thing as “Right or Wrong” in Sashiko. Did they ever want to be a Sashiko Artist? The majority didn’t think of going outside of the community. It was their honor to protect the “place to be”, and their pride to “keep improving” their stitches.

☆

It is my honor to offer the place for you to be, and my pride to keep “sharing” the Sashiko stories instead of “filtered information” to profit off from indifference in the place I would like to protect.

The same patterns & the same way to draw Asano-ha. The difference is the size of pattern & size of stitches. There is no single same results in hand-stitching. That is the beauty of Sashiko & mindfulness of ourselves.

☆ – – – ☆ I used to offer “Sashiko Live Streaming”, twice a week, to share my stitching as well as some “Sashiko stories”. Since my daughter is staying home until the school starts, I am pausing it for now. The live streaming was…

The Japanese words you know may have a bit different meaning to the native Japan

The Japanese words you know may have a bit different meaning to the native Japanese people. In a process of translating Japanese to English, sometimes, the actual meaning gets to be altered. There is no other way around because there is no other way to express it, yet the more…

My mother (72 yo) was telling me the other day about her mother’s life. Turns out that my grandmother would get together with a group of other women every week to knit socks for an evening. They would occupy the front room and no other people allowed in for a few hours.

That’s beautiful what you say about creating a place to be about sashiko stitching and true. You can tell it about other works that require your attention and love (most of time for someone else.. the pple that you are working for, known or unknown) That allow you to share with others, that makes you improve your skill and self confidence.

I think “a place to be” is for me why I do many craft and creative activities. This post really resonated with me, sashiko is new to me and I am learning all I can. I mostly create things for myself or family, not for sale. The biggest benefit for me is definitely the process. Thank you for such an insightful post.

I enjoy your stories and your personal philosophy concerning Sashiko, a needlework process wrapped in culture that I know nothing about. Thank you for telling about the culture and your own personal creative input. In your sharing, it is making people aware of things that they have probably not been aware of. It is a huge gift. Thank you ❤️
