Our Sashiko Story to Your Sashiko Journey

I try to be as “difficult” as possible on social media to share the boundaries.

atsushijp, 2021年5月16日

I try to be as “difficult” as possible on social media to share the boundaries. I enjoy “Casual Friendliness”, but a DM saying “Hey, I like your work. Tell me how I can do it” is outside of my comfortable boundaries. However, in-person, it is not my intention to be difficult. As a base-line,  I would like to know who I am talking to. (Since I have a very specific preference, some may find me difficult… but that’s another story).

☆

I started an Online Sashiko Class for those who couldn’t meet me in person. In Covid-19, I invested a lot to make it better & easier to learn. I offer online classes because it is challenging to meet them in person. On this visit to FL, one of my Online Sashiko Class students made a visit to me, and we could finally meet in person. It was delightful. She knows me well through what I have shared. I know her well through her Sashiko. I didn’t feel it was the first time to meet at all. This is one of my goals – “pass down the Sashiko”. It doesn’t have to be my family to pass down. It is my friends who understand my messages – that Sashiko is more than a trend & stitching. It is just a delightful pleasure to meet new friends.

One news delivered me a mixed feeling – sad, empathy, and encouragement. One of the groups of artisans we had built a good relationship decided to go “part-time” from “full-time”. They will still take our orders, and nothing will dramatically change, but I cannot stop thinking about the reason behind…

We are a group of Sashiko stitchers – and Sashiko usually indicates a form of Japanese hand stitching. So, yes, it is hand-stitched. The previous posts (on 11/3 & 11/5) are the photos of the denim curtain with me hand-stitching in 5 months probably a few hours every week. Most…

“Cultural Appropriation (C/A)” is a new word for me. I am still learning. The series from @little_kotos_closet has been a great source to educate myself. One phrase caught my eyes, “But my Japanese friend said it’s okay”. I often get similar comments. ☆ I “believe” they say it’s okay. I…

I’m looking forward to starting my Sashiko journey soon. I have denim that will need repairs throughout its life as I wear it. I have items that I want to feel personalized. I like how you say there’s no “right” or “wrong” way to do something if you’re trying to appreciate and learn. I hope I do Sashiko justice while I learn

You don’t seem difficult to me at all!…
I get a lot of people as well, asking me, if i could quickly describe my knotting to them, so they can do it themselves. Many people don’t have a sense for the fact, that you need to learn and practice, practice, practice….. and that it needs years of experience to create technical high end pieces. After more than 25 years, i don’t feel i am done learning in my own field.
By the way, i really love your work and technical skills. 🌸

Getting to attend one of your classes is a bucket list item for me watching your videos over the last few years has helped change the way I view sewing and clothes. I think you’re right to be careful of blunt and abrupt DMs. You have provided a wealth of information and mentoring online for free. While I look forward to the chance to learn from you in person you have already given me so much.
